You obviously have no experience with an addict. They will agree to and say they will abide by all the rules. They won't. Making new rules doesn't change their behavior. She has violated the rules and we are now at the point of paying for the consequences of that.

The consequences are that she has to leave now. Nothing works and the lies continue. I can do the part of telling her to go lead the life she wants to but we can't support her in that. I don't know how to explain this to my grandson, his face still lights up every time she is there for him, which isn't nearly enough. But after all her failures as a parent to him he still adores her. I've seen his face when she lets him down and doesn't show up or keep a promise to him. I don't know how to be the one that lets him down in that way.

Edit: I realized some here may not know who Nubain was. He was an intelligent and savy heroin addict from the other place. He thought he was smarter than his addiction. He died with a needle in his arm.

My aunt was a hard core user when I was a kid, she and hubby od and the kids lived with us for a year plus until she divorced the enabler and cleaned up. My parents walked in to find them on the floor with 2 little ones running around dirty so took the kids. She was told she'd never see them again if she touched another needle, luckily she grew up and didn't again.
I grew up with relatives using(and hard core drunks) and have known more than a couple users over the years. It's a hard thing to do but cutting contact has probably saved my sanity, that and I refuse to let my kid grow up around it. I haven't seen some in 25 or 30 years now and it'll be too soon whenever I do again.

The biggest difference here is that the addict is my child. One who has a son who has depended on us his entire life. One who I don't have legal custody of. I would have to go to court and destroy my daughter and prove her an unfit mother to get it. I suppose we are at that point. That me and my wife will have to initiate this. I will try to talk to her tonight about it.

But really, we just buried her father yesterday. She needs some time to grieve before another painful episode begins.
