Doug calling me the #1 Chess Champion on the 15k thread. I'll take that to my grave.

Biggest accomplishment in life. Well I have accomplished a lot but this one is probably it.

Retiring quite comfortably, without a college education at age 55. Proving out that common sense and hard work will take you a long ways!

Now 78 and in spite of all the politicians trying to **** up things, still quite comfortable!

Finding the right girl, convincing her to marry me, making the hard decision to move to a better place before our kids began school, and raising two successful adults that hate Democrats as much as I do.

Kinda the same here.

Being totally self-taught, having never paid any "professional" for investment advice, I have substantially more income during retirement than I did when working -- most of it is from my bond/stock portfolio; SS is a minor player. (I was a moldmaker, self-employed from 1985-2021). More than half of the income it kicks off gets reinvested. It's all interest and some divvies, I don't have to sell any securities.

Most of the thanks goes to my late dad, from whom I learned to live frugally. Living below your means is the key.

Not having killed anyone just because they're incredibly stupid.

Trust me, it's a struggle

Against all odds, enlisted and served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. Within that time, I served three years working in American Embassy security. Two years as a Drill Instructor. Went to combat three times. Up to this day, I will never understand or accept how come I got blown up four times and not even a scratch, only a ringing ear, now tinnitus.

One day I was going out with a logistic convoy, and right when I was going to climb, I got this feeling on my chest and didn't go.

This was the hummer

My story too. Dropped out of college after a year to pursue my real passion: working on cars and trucks. Self taught, along with many tech courses as technology rapidly changed from the 1970's and into the '80's and '90's. Lived under my means due to depression era parents, mowed lawns as a kid, etc. Started investing at 26 for my retirement and ended up changing careers at 35 after 17 years in the auto industry and doing automotive law enforcement for another 25 years, retiring at 60 2 years ago. My income is more than twice what it was when working. I just wish I had the motivation and energy to do more with it!!! Youth is truly wasted on the young.

Clearing up maybe some minor confusion from my previous post: I am NOT a self-taught moldmaker -- which was my career from 1968-2021 -- I learned from numerous German and Austrian >(the best) moldmakers who owned the small job shops I worked at. That's where the real work gets done; the big Blue Chip companies would quickly collapse without job shops.

I am a self-taught investor.

Yup, having worked hard all your career to have it pay off in a safe and comfortable retirement for my wife and I and still have the resources to help out the kids if I ever need to. It's comforting to know I will leave my kids far better off than my parents left me.

Can't get much better than this.
