My dad's close friend was a Huey Driver in Vietnam. He got shot down and was hit several times. One in the chest and I believe in the neck as well. He laid in a ditch all night with some medic working on him during a heavy firefight. Very lucky to be alive that fella. I believe he is on full disability because of his wounds. The crew bailed out the other side of the helicopter, they were all killed by machine gun fire. My good friend is Vietnamese. His father was a Captain in the South Vietnamese Army. When the country fell completely, he was able to get asylum in the USA. He is considered an enemy of the State, and can never go back. I don't believe any of his family can travel there. |

It's also the 49th anniversary of the bomb accident that killed three Weather Underground members, who intended to bomb a non-commissioned officer dance at Ft. Dix later that evening.

My wife is Vietnamese and her father was a Major in the S. Vietnamese Rangers. He was killed in battle in 66. When Saigon fell in 75 even though her dad had been dead for almost 10 years she being the oldest at 20 had spend 2 years in a so called re education camp (prison farm). After we got married I was wondering about her country. At first she did not want to go back due to bad memories. (she had no immediate family there) After diplomatic relations had been in set in 92 some her friend went there including some that had been in the military. One of her friends gave her a video of Saigon and she started wonder how has it changed since she left in 89. So we went in 2000 and again in 2009. Well be going back when she retires at the end of this year. It's a disgrace the way the Vietnam veteran was treated by our government and people.

My brother Eric was a Huey pilot in Company A, 501st Aviation Battalion; 71st Assault Helicopter Company. He was awarded the purple heart, bronze star, and the distinguished flying cross just to name a few. Dude had a couple legendary missions while he was there. He's a retired Lutheran minister these days.
