Shouldn't that be tempered? The guys just broke the glass on one of our brand new oven doors during the install, but it stayed in place for the most part. Sorry to see that! Good luck with the customer service.

That's how tempered breaks. Laminated, like your front windshield, hangs together.

Tempered glass shatters into a billion little squares and does not slit your body to shreds. No jagged edges to pierce your heart. If it's laminated it will break the same but all the pieces are held together with a plasticy goodness.

Tempering of glass is like a stress relief process. It makes the glass tougher and more shatter resistant...
But when it does shatter, it does so into very fine (small) pieces, rather than large jagged chunks. It is for this reason tempered glass is often used for cookware and other household products, as the tiny pieces are less likely to cause cuts and injuries. |

Thanks guys, that makes sense. When our oven glass cracked , it was a million pieces but it stayed in place. It could have almost gone unnoticed from some angles.

One problem with Tempered glass...its very susceptable to sudden failure if the surface tension is released...such as with a scratch, or nick in the glass...

well, I was in Texas for a few months, working at Montgomery Wards....TV shop and some cowboy was pissed his team lost a game, pulled out his .38 and emptied all 6 into the TV screen, shattering the bonded safety glass, but lucky for HIM it did not go through to the tube itself....IF it had been a 357 he would be dead, and the set would have been in the evidence lab.... |

Usually that will happen after a sharp small impact, like slipping with a screwdriver or like above a pan dropping on it's edge or corner. Or it was bumped during manufacture and the frame was putting stress on the glass in the first place.
Hope they come good for it, you've already had enough crap on your plate to last. |
