Default Another Slipjoint knife finished [Pics]

Just finished this one up. This will be the first slippy that goes up for sale. It is my third and a little different design.

It's called a swayback wharncliffe, and is probably not what you may be used to seeing. I hated the shape and design at first, but it has grown on me...Turned out to be a real pain to make, just because it isn't shaped like the more common ones. All the geometry is different..

It has fossil mammoth tooth handle scales from Siberia (last ice age) just like the last knife I posted, 410 bolsters and liners, and a 15N20/1095 Damascus blade. This tooth is a little different color, but still good looking I think. Still on the fence about the gold screws ..

What do you think?

That is cool.
Was it hard to cut/shape the mammoth tooth scales?
I have a piece that i may try and work with.

I think it's beautiful! The pattern on the blade is fabulous!

I like the gold screws when the blade is closed, better than opened because the warm colors match. I'm curious, are screws more common than rivets now?

WOW! I'm really jealous of both you bastards!

Actually, I love the shape of that handle. Looks like you would have a great grip when you are really putting your shoulder into a cut.

Not really Steve, it's just very brittle. It needs to be backed with fiber spacer material..that helps hold it together. The problem lies in the fact that there are alternating hard and soft areas..for instance when you drill, if you are on the line between hard and soft the drill will tend to push towards the softer side and away from the harder side. Grinding is fairly easy although it stinks like crazy - like most bone stuff..

I can honestly say I won't do another with the stuff unless someone specifically asks for it.

Screws are used here because the mammoth tooth is so brittle. the normal pins are there - the one in the middle of the back spring and the one in the rear of the handle; they are just hidden. They are ground flat with the liners. If I were to have brought them up through the scales like most slip joints and peened (piened?) everything there, the expanding pins may have cracked or busted the tooth. The stuff is somewhat like rock, because it is in a fossilized state.

Have to agree. Silver would match the bolster, but would defiantly contrast to sharply and detract from the tooth material. Gold is a more comfortable color for the handle.
