Default bitchin 32 ford

Any deuce fans here? Anyone take on a project build of a car? This is my lifelong project to build. The "Doyle Gammel" coupe. Just ordered the rolling chassis from Pete & Jakes with all the chrome goodies. Have to start saving for the chopped Brookville steel body, I want to do full fender - that's going to take a while.

I think they kick ass. But...please don't do like so many and put a Chevy engine in it. Not that it wouldn't run great, but you're building a Ford. I couldn't count the Cobra replicas I've seen with Chevy engines. I guess I feel like it just ain't right or something. But the '32 Fords are among my favorites.

same page here man A Ford in a Ford. Plans are for a 351W /Dart 2.02 heads (unless a flathead comes my way) with a Tremec TKO or T-56. Yep, I will be forever broke

Yep - with a 1951 Flathead. Flathead has Offenhauser high compression heads and triple intake with 3 Stromberg 97s, Isky 3/4 race cam and Mallory dual point system.

The tranny is a 1939 Ford truck 3-speed floor shift and it has the original banjo rearend.

My dad and I built this from scratch. We bought a 32 frame and did the box and fill. Took us three years to build in our spare time.

This was the last project that my dad and I worked on together before he passed away. It's one of my favorite memories.

What kind of hp can you make with a flatty??? I LOVE the way they look, but for tire melting, I'm not sure it would be my choice. Oh, and killer ride!!!

You can make some serious HP with a Flathead with the proper speed equipment. But then you're talking serious $$$. If your serious about one, Speedway Motors is an excellent source for all kinds of rods. Chances are, you'll be looking for suspension, steering and other items here.

For tire melting, I wouldn't recommend a Flathead. Parts are expensive and if you crack the block, you're hosed. This one sits at around 200 HP. Stock was close to 100. I don't drive it hard... it's more for just cruising and the occasional rod show.

nhl,

now that's something right there very well done. The offenhausers are badazz.

Did it take a while to find a that flattie? The prevalence of cracked blocks scares me and I really don't need any more expensive door stops.

The fact that you and your Dad did it makes it a priceless memory. Just awesome.

The blocks are out there... but you've got to be careful finding them. This one is actually a 51 Mercury block. The Mercury has a longer stroke and [supposedly] better cooling channels. Hemmings Motor News is where we found the block. We went completely through the engine when we got it - magnafluxed and blueprinted to make sure we didn't have any cracks. Honestly, I love the looks of the Flathead - and you just don't see them hardly anymore. But, they're expensive to build. We have close to $10k in this one.

I'm glad that you're building a 32 and sticking with a Ford engine. Back at the link for Speedway Motors... they have a 302 crate that's 300+ hp out of the box. Blueprint 302 Ford Hot Rod Crate Engines - Speedway Motors, America's Oldest Speed Shop I'm not suggesting you take this route... but if I didn't already have a Flathead, I would consider it.

NHL, GREAT CAR GUY!!!!

I remember one of them about 60 years ago, kid in the 'hood' had one, years later a buddy had a nearly perfect '35 rumble seat convertible resto winner....

I tried to get him to make a hot rod outta it, so when it came time to sell, he got maybe enough to brake even on it....but as a hotrod he could have gotten about 30 grand more....

for all the work he had done....oh well.....

This is an area to where I'm really torn. I love the hotrods, but to find an unmolested original car is hard to come by. To take one that is complete and transform to something else is difficult for me to appreciate - not saying that it wouldn't be a nice car... I just can't see destroying a piece of our automotive history when there's nothing wrong with it.

Now... finding a frame and building one up -

Always loved the 32 especially roadsters. Many years ago a group of us formed a hot rod car club and acquired a California style roadster. It had '40 juice brakes, '39 tranny, and motorcycle front fenders. The flat head was pulled and an Olds with a cam and carbs installed. We added a rollbar and went drag racing in A/SR class.

It was great fun, we'd flip a coin to see who would make the next pass. Rules were a lot looser back then.

Where did you find the body? Is it original steel or glass? Condition? If you were to redo this project would you still have opted for the flathead?

Yeah, those bias ply slicks make a big difference in looks over radials. I have to decide if I want to stay 60's period with the pie crusts or get the ride benefits of radials.

another pic of a big $$ flathead:

and another 32

The body is a Gibbon glass body Gibbon Fiberglass Reproductions: Welcome. We went with the Gibbon over a Brookville because of the cost and the roadster pickup shell is 2" longer than stock. It's real tight getting in and out and those additional 2" really help. I doubt I would do another Flathead. Too expensive and parts can be hard to come by. Most likely, would do a 302.

I just bought this a few weeks ago and plan to strip it to nuts and bolts (maybe this winter). The previous owner did some pretty shitty work on parts of it.

Dad has a 350 4-bolt waiting for me in FL, but I really want to go with Ford's Coyote motor on the next go around. Stuffing a 350 with a super charger on top of the frame would be much easier, though.
