The origin of the "Garbage Plate," https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Tahou_Hots in nearby Rochester.

I guess imitations of these are all over the country by now. Every place around here has their copy of it.

I first went in the original Nick's in 1968. Me and my buddies would close the bars at 2:00 and head out, shitfaced, to Nick's to pig out. You wouldn't dare go in there sober, it was not in a good neighborhood and had a lot of rough people -- and a lot of them weren't white. Having said that, we never had any problem there.

With the Garbage Plates you could get burgers, red or white hots, or Italian sausage, maybe others too. It was fiddy+ years ago, we were always drunk, so I don't recall all the details. All plates came with home fries, mac salad, and cold beans.

He had two huge grills and there was always a gigantic pile of home fries (probably a foot high) in one corner, rows of meat being cooked or kept warm elsewhere. The place was really hopping after the bars closed.

Me: "A plate with burgers and everything, and extra hot sauce." "Everything" meant ketchup, mustard, and raw onions as I recall. They were 90¢, no charge for extra of his unique hot sauce.

Ah well life is fun, then you get old and feel like shit, then you croak.

Germans have a weird version as well. The Currywurst. It's a steamed brat that is then deep fried a la a ripper. They like to just cut it into pieces and pour a load of curry spiced ketchup over the top. Typical to get it with fries.
