Default All right, all right, all right: O'Rourke weighs in on McConaughey's potential bid

Former Rep.*Beto O'Rourke*(D-Texas) says he's not surprised by polls showing that*Matthew McConaughey*would beat Texas Gov.*Greg Abbott*(R) in a hypothetical 2022 matchup, because the actor has remained politically ambiguous while flirting with his possible gubernatorial run.

"If you're talking about McConaughey, he's a really popular figure whose political views have not in any way been fixed," O'Rourke told*Kara Swisher*on the New York Times's "Sway" podcast*on Monday.

"I don't know, for example, who he voted for in the most consequential election since 1864 in this country," O'Rourke, himself a potential 2022 opponent against Abbott, said of the "Dallas Buyers Club" star.

"I don't know how he feels about any of the issues that we've brought up," O'Rourke said. "So I think that might explain part of it."

A*poll conducted earlier this month*by the Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler found that 37 percent of respondents said they would vote for O'Rourke in next year's election if he were to run - putting him just 5 percentage points behind Abbott.

But McConaughey landed 9 percentage points ahead of Abbott, with 44 percent of those surveyed saying they would cast a ballot for the entertainer.

In recent months McConaughey has publicly been weighing a turn to politics, calling a bid for the Texas governor's office a "true consideration."

"I'm more of a folksy and philosopher poet statesman than I am a, per se, definitive politician," McConaughey*said in an interview last week, while acknowledging he was "measuring" a political run.

O'Rourke, who lost a 2018 bid to unseat Sen.*Ted Cruz*(R-Texas), counted himself among McConaughey's admirers, calling the performer a "great actor" and a "good guy who's done some good work in this state."

"I don't know anything about his potential run other than what I've read,"*he told Swisher.

O'Rourke noted that McConaughey was on hand in 2019 following a mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, and during a deadly winter storm in the Lone Star State earlier this year.

"I'm a fan of his," O'Rourke said, "and I've been so impressed by how he's used his celebrity and star power to help others."

When asked for a comment McConaughey replied, " You wanna know the best thing about new voters? I get older but they're still the same age."

Watching politics turn in to a popularity contest is sickening.

When was it different?

Oh wait,, I remember. That was when politics was forced upon you at the point of a sword, an arrow or a bullet.

See Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great, Mao, Hitler, Pol Pot, etc.

I was thinking of the AOC "Look at me I'm popular just like High School" type.

JFK was "popular" but he at least had something to say.

People who do not/did not belong in politics:

Al Franken
Sonny Bono
Arnold Schwartznshit
Jessie Ventura
etc.

Hey brother Aerovette, when you're right you're right and you're right.

But if we're going to be comprehensive the short list would be "those who do belong in politics."

I'll start:

President Trump.
Rand Paul.
Marjorie Green.

I don't agree with everything from any of them, but they'll deserve a place on the list. There are more, but it's late and I'm tard.

Feel free to add your own.

And does Beto need to follow Porter's lead and do the STFU thing?

Sirius, what makes beto think he can win when he's been rejected twice by TX? What kind of fraud are the demofelons planning now?

I like Matthew McConaughey but need him here in Ca, Texas is doing alright.

I don't know how Mathew would rule but believe he is a good guy inside.

Ca needs someone with a name/fame who ain't a screwball lefty.

Thanks for the welcome, C8 is out of my league.
