Shouldn't have to remove the three bolts on hte backside because the whole unit comes off the spline. In any event when you do loosen these first they'll hit that metal boot on the end of the driveshaft. Anyway got it off with the gearpuller finally. I can tell you now I tried what was in Mr Latham's write-up but I want to add you are NOT going to get that bearing hub off without a gear puller of some kind. You can rubber mallet and beat on that thing all you want and it's not going to come off. Besides you risk doing more damage than good. I definately recommend a puller of some kind. Thanks all, the car is finally quiet again.

^ Depends on the age/mileage of your car. On a car that gets tracked some and you're prelacing hubs once a year they come off w/o issue. On a 10 year old car where they've never been removed... well that's another story!

Just wanted to bump this thread b/c I went through this last night and feel your pain.... I had never actually done a rear wheel hub/bearing, but am swapping them out for my track car build.
I had the same two problems you did.... getting the lower balljoint stud to stay in place and getting the hub off. Also, had to resort to my 3-arm pulley puller... no way in heck a rubber mallett was getting anything done. My Z06 is a 2001 w/ 120k miles that's never been apart.... so basically the axle splines and hub are fused together.
