My son and I have a deal. He keeps an app on his phone that shows me his location and he can drive my truck.

Just found out the app shows his top speed. 84-86 in a 65 zone on several of his trips.

In a 2002 Explorer with 196k on it. The rear bushings are shot so it’s a bit sloppy. All new front suspension. I don’t even drive it that fast because it’s damn scary.

I had to tell him I can see his speed. Intrusive? Yes. My ****ing truck? Yes.

I told him if he exceeds the speed limit, no truck. If he disabled the app, no truck. If he wants to buy his own vehicle that might be different. He will be 18 in two months.

I’m going to give him a chance this time.

You are on the right track. Find the next Tire Rack Teen Street Survival school available and sign him up for that. He'll learn car control and actually see how fast things come at him at speed. Our incident rate after training is 7%.

I'm not going to judge. Traffic, circumstances, etc. may have led to the indiscretion. The speed limit near Atlanta is 55. Do that, and you will get run slap over.

During my talks with teens at driving school, I remind them that they are piloting a 4-5000 lb. weapon. Just like a firearm, the same precautions are needed. You'd be amazed at some of their eyes opening when put that way.

I beat the ever living shit out of GWiz when it came to driving. Full stops at every single stop sign, turn signals even if you are the only car on the interstate, and no texting EVER.
