I didn't start riding until I was in my early 20s, hence I never got very good. I still ride and have fun though.

Nobody around me had dirt bikes when I was a kid. Parents simply would not spend that kind of money for toys.
However, my one neighbor had a mini-bike his dad built from a bicycle frame, with 6-8" hardware store wheels on it so it sat very low to the ground, with a lawnmower engine for power. My dad built me a go-kart that was so weak (plus a fluid clutch) it wouldn't really move unless it was on pavement. He built it from parts from a junkyard. These toys were great fun, and much better than pumping bicycles. By the mid-'60s some younger kids were getting dirt bikes, but by then most of us were getting driver's licenses so we didn't give a crap about the toys anymore. |

Took about a full year of being a pain the ass to my parents begging for permission to get a motocross bike.
Finally, I got my Kawasaki KX-80. There was about 6 of us kids in the neighborhood who rode everywhere and did crazy stuff that only a kid would do. |

No way in hell mom would have allowed it, so I got my first Harley at 21. Never really got into dirt biking, though I loved 4 wheeling a lot.

My dad reluctantly gave me a 74 Suzuki TM 125 for Christmas when I was 12 , it was beat to hell but I had worn him down for years , I was hoping for a mean green KX 80 but no .. I would spend most of a Saturday just trying to get the heap to start, but it was mine.. it would kick back like a bitch .. oh well..

I had a 72? Suzuki 250 , seized piston, that I got from a secured debt. I fixed it, and learned how to ride. That training proved invaluable later on with my street bikes.

Rode a bunch of my friends cycles until in my teens. Was lucky that my uncle was a flat track racer and my cousin was a top 20 Trials rider. Always had something to ride.

I learned how to ride on a TT500 pretty sure it was a 1975 model. It was my friends dads bike and i am the only one he would let ride it. He broke me in the hard way with the compression release. i love that old man.

I had a shitty mini bike or two and Yamaha 175 and 250 enduros. We lived along the Grand River with a park across the street and a woods down at the end of the road which ended in a cul-de-sac. So I had plenty of good times without too much interference from the cops. I did have a certain neighbor who just couldn’t stand seeing kids have fun so she’d occasionally drop the dime to the boys on me. She never could understand why kids egged her house on Halloween, the old crone.

Started out with a Yamaha 80 when I was 8, Yamaha 125 when I was 10, Yamaha 250 when I was 14. Mostly enduro racing not motocross at the time. Ended with a Suzuki GS750 street bike when I was 16.
I worked at a cycle shop between 14 and 16 and got to ride all the new RM Suzukis, Maicos, Hodakas, Hondas, etc. Probably the baddest ass dirt bike I ever rode was a Maico 450, scary to kick over and trench digger through every gear, crazy wild ride. |

TM 125, YZ 125, CR 125, KX 250, etc.
I rode an IT 425 on the street when I was a recruiter. I don’t know how the person I bought it from, got it titled? Didn’t have turn signals or such. That thing was a beast. Last dirt bike I got was a YZ 450, my first 4 stroke. I didn’t know squat about them and thought I should go bigger because it was a 4 stroke. Too much bike for me! FTR, I was a good rider but not great. Definitely not like these modern free style riders. Insane! |
