Linseed oil

I bought my first house in 1989 and built my first workbench shortly after. Taking a tip that I learned from my grandfather I finished the bench, and all my wood tool handles, with boiled linseed oil. A quart can may have been five bucks and a gallon, $15. So I splurged and got the gallon.

I still have about half of the gallon left. I've moved four times since and it's still around. I used it to finish a new top to a cheap movable bench that I have.

Subject matter is definitely *89x2* enthralling material. At least Yaddie posted a pic, which CFOT's top content creator doesn't do. Yaddie needs to bump this thread in a year with some bizarre comment to really be a true content creator.

I worry! What does linseed oil have to do with Rickles's balloon knot??

I've used linseed oil on gunstocks and with oil paints since the '60's. Love the smell. It will combust if you leave it out in the sun on rags, though. Neighbor burnt their house down where I used to live doing that. Refinishing kitchen cabinets in the summertime, went out for lunch and left the oily rags on the counter. Whoosh. House was totally gutted.

Properly stored, BLO has a shelf life of four years. Might want to throw it out and get a new can.


I use other products myself, but I always write the date on the bottom of the can with a permanent marker when I buy it. After two years or so, I buy fresh product. Lately I've been using Bush Oil on my boxes and other small items. A bit more solids in it than some products helps it to build a finish a little more quickly. After the last coat has cured, I top it off with a good paste wax.

Here's a recent box I built out of bubinga. Four coats of Bush Oil and a coat of paste wax. Looks good and has a silky smooth feel to it. People just want to rub it. While it is not suitable for anything exposed to the elements, I think an oil and wax finish is one of the more elegant ways to finish good timber.

I've heard that before but the coat I put on that bench yesterday is dry to the touch already- the can says full cure may take 3 days.
