Default [Woodworking] crazy quilt cutting board

just started this today, will take about a week to glue up, have to glue up sections, let dry, trim any uneven edges, and then add the next section to it.

walnut, cherry, and maple, with purple heart and teak (not shown) accents...

Wouldn't it be easier to just use one piece of wood instead of glueing all those little pieces together?

JK - Looks cool, can't wait to see the finished product.

It looks like a small wind would blow it away. What happens when you put it in the dishwasher? Do you have to assemble the little pieces all over again? Do you include a pattern and extra pieces for when some get lost? I wouldn't quit my day job if I were you.

you never put wood cutting boards in a dishwasher. will be 2" thick, not going anywhere once done.

Wood cutting boards are actually cleaner, and better then plastic cutting boards. Meant to be manually washed, no dish washer.

i include a one page instruction sheet, with do's and don'ts and how to care for it going forward....if cared for properly, a good end grain cutting board should last a looong time.

Cutting board care

I hope you enjoy this cutting board for many years. Below are some general guidelines for care of the cutting board, as well as websites that have additional information on cutting boards.

From Walnut Cutting Boards, Cherry Cutting Board, Wood Conditioner

NEVER submerge cutting boards in sink of water - not even for a second!!! Wood is porous and will soak up water causing the cutting board to crack when it dries. Wipe with hot soapy dish cloth and towel dry. DO NOT put in dishwasher. Store cutting boards flat to prevent warping.

Regular monthly maintenance for when your board looks or feels dry: Rub entire item with mineral oil or OZ Fine Culinary Wood Conditioner. Let it stand for five minutes before wiping off the excess oil with a dry cloth or paper towel.

Never use vegetable oils. These oils can become rancid, which in turn, can make your product rancid and create a health problem.

To bring your cutting boards back to looking and feeling like new, rub the entire item with mineral oil or OZ Fine Culinary Wood Conditioner. Using fine 320-wet/dry sandpaper, apply pressure and sand with the grain using long strokes. Wipe off the excess oil with a dry cloth or paper towel.

To eradicate garlic, onion or other smells from board, rub the board with course salt or baking soda. Let stand a few minutes and wipe salt or baking soda from board. The smell should be gone.

Repeat process as needed.

This cutting board was finished a beeswax/mineral oil finish similar to that noted above. The glue used is also food safe (Titebond III).

Other websites:
Cutting Boards, Chopping Blocks, Butcher Blocks, Cutting Board Oil, Butcher Block Oil, How To Purchase Cutting Boards, How To Season Cutting Boards, Wood vs plastic cutting boards

Butcher Block Cutting Boards and Counter Tops

Douglas Brinkman

nothing complicated, but if you don't care for it, you can ruin it.
