Anybody here know how to stitch leather?
The case for my Swiss Army knife needs some attention. The stitching is all gone. I’ll gladly mail and pay for the repair, if any of y’all can do it.

Well years back I had my local shoemaker repair and or alter all sorts of leather items like slings and holsters. They did very good work and normally quite promptly.

Yeah, didn't consider a Saddle shop. Lots of equestrian stuff around these parts, I'll work that angle.

DIY. The holes are already there, and that's the hard part of stitching leather. Use a medium gage needle, the same size waxed thread and a small pair of pliers to push the needle as needed.
Once you take it apart you can clean it and oil the leather to your personal liking. |

Did a lot of that in the Coast Guard. The stuff we used is called "sail twine" It's a waxed jute, but there are some synthetic variants these days. The needle has a triangular point and a large eye hole so threading it won't be a problem.

This guy always comes to our reenactments and does repairs
http://www.lepierreleathers.com/ Also, check with any old local shoe shops. We have one left here. OR do it yourself. The holes are already there and that is the hard part of the job. www.tandyleather.com |

I got the "Leatherworking" merit badge at summer camp in 1975, so clearly, I'm an expert!
More seriously though, I know a guy in my neighborhood that I believe has the tools/knowledge/skills to make that repair, so if you really get stuck, I can ask him. However, whoever suggested the local cobbler is of similar mind to me. That is where I would take such a thing first. Good luck! |

Funny, years ago I knew a fellow who had a side gig making RenFaire clothing and did well with it. Somebody saw his leatherwork for that and asked if he could make "Custom Ordered Leather" things. He wasn't sure what they meant, but said yes. His first commission impressed so many people in the BDSM community, he later ended up quitting his main gig and just doing that.

If you want to do it yourself, Standing Bears Leather Supply on Tampa has the threads and needles you need. It’s an easy fix to DIY. If you don’t, any shoemaker in the Valley can do this.
