Default [Woodworking] Charcuterie Boards

well, last week, I couldn't spell "Charcuterie", and now i'm making 3 of them. it's a fancy word for wood with food on it. normally used for serving such things as fruit, cheeses, cured meats, nuts....munchies to you and me.

So i have a friend who runs a cafe down town (Root 66), and they have been hired to cater a wedding next month, and some of the munchies would best be served on a fancy ass Charcuterie Board. ok, sure, i can make those. we agree on a size (about 12x24, with a 1-1/2" high border) and wood (walnut). the borders will allow A) more stuff to be placed on them without falling off, and 2) will allow them to be stacked when loaded and also wrapped with cling wrap for transport.

got them glued up and then unclamped and the excess glue scraped off. will let them cure for a few more hours before trimming to final size, planing, and then adding borders.

oh, and wood is not cheap these days....that's about $300 worth of walnut...don't screw it up!

I wish you best, call on Yadkin, er I meant Tiki, as his thread detailed some high-quality wood craftsmanship.

I have no patience, or skills, so I just buy them at the store,,,

Very nice. People are loving them now since adults now grew up on Lunchables, the kid's version a charcuterie board. LOL

Looking forward to seeing the finished project too!

one other item: he runs a Vegan cafe, so using my normal finish is a no go, as it contains beeswax, so i'll just use mineral oil as a finish.

dry fit after some sanding. that's enough for today, more tomorrow.

i intentionally did not join the borders in the corners, so there would not be a hard to reach inside corner that would be hard to clean down the road. the long pieces are 1" from the corner, the short pieces are 2" from the corner.

A little sanding and I’ll let the mineral oil soak in for a bit.

As the proud owner of one of DAB's beautiful (and heavy) cutting boards, I can attest to the fact that his stuff is real craftsmanship.

Good to see you back in action Doug.

LOL! I mean, did you tell him no bees were harmed producing the wax? But I guess bee keepers are patriarchal colonizers, subjugating the bees now? Really not understanding this one. Providing homes for bee colonies is bad because.....??????

from what i gather, Vegans (and they are really quick to tell you that they are Vegan) don't use anything related to any living critter. mammal (no bacon), fish (no salmon), birds (no chicken), insects (no beeswax or honey), or any animal by product (no milk or butter).....makes eating rather hard in my view. but i'll respect his wishes and his wish to retain his clients who rely on things being kept Vegan. rather like trying to keep Kosher...it can be done, but it's work.

so i'll take one extra step and accommodate him.

for those wondering about costs, just checked the receipt, and the lumber and the mineral oil, plus tax, totaled $324.91, and i had enough scraps that you could hold them all in one hand, just little pieces, so pretty good estimating on how much i needed.

We had a 175 year old oak go down at our local civil war battlefield.

I want to (and can) get some of it to do something with vs letting it rot away.

It was a witness tree to the battle. Probably not even ankle high at that time, but was there. It was beautiful tree sitting out in a field all to itself. A couple bad storms, bad ground that doesn't drain water properly, etc...took it's toll on it.

But, what about the poor walnut trees that had to die?

Nice work :seasix our son-in-law does woodworking and has made a lot of cutting boards and similar things. He’s getting into various kinds of boxes and chests, as well as more complicated stuff. He made me this last year for Christmas.
