College Football WEEK 1 Game Day Thread

It's time.




After a great appetizer last Saturday with the Nebraska vs. Northwestern game in Ireland going down to the wire (and resulting in yet another Nebraska under Scott Frost choke job), we're kicking off the 2022 college football season for real with a long 5 day weekend of football games.

The action kicks off tonight (Thursday) with a Big 12 vs. ACC match-up that will be the battle of former USC quarterbacks when West Virginia, helmed by former USC and UGA QB J.T. Daniels, takes on Pitt, helmed by former USC QB Kedon Slovis. In addition, an unranked to start the season Penn State travels to Purdue tonight for a tough, in-conference road opener in the Big 10.

There are quite a few interesting story lines this weekend. On Sunday night in the Superdome, LSU will debut under new head coach Brian Kelley against Florida State in year 2 under Mike Norvell. On Monday night, preseason #4 Clemson, following a disappointing season for them, will kick of 2022 against Georgia Tech with a now experienced DJ Uiagalelei at QB for the Tigers. Will he lead Clemson to a strong bounce back or struggle? 5-Star QB Cade Klubnik waits in the wings . . . .

On Saturday in the Swamp, Florida debuts under new head coach Billy Napier and hosts PAC-12 favorite and playoff contender #7 Utah. HUGE game for not only Utah, but a PAC-12 conference whose credibility was already suffering greatly BEFORE the news broke that USC (and UCLA) will be departing in a couple of years for the B1G Ten.

2021 Playoff Cinderella #23 Cincinnati kicks off the season with a brutal road test against #19 Arkansas on Saturday afternoon.


GAMES OF THE WEEK:
#5 Notre Dame @ #2 Ohio State
#11 Oregon @ #3 Georgia

We've got a pair of incredible match-ups between highly ranked pre-season playoff contenders. Notre Dame debuts under new head coach Marcus Freeman. He won bigly in the offseason. But can he win under the lights at the horseshoe against an Ohio State squad favored to face-off against Alabama for the title when the season concludes in January? Ohio State's defense will have a brand new look. No more easy to read Ds from the Buckeyes, who hired Jim Knowles away from Oklahoma State as their D Coordinator. The offense will again be loaded with talent, and now once again led by a star QB with some experience under his belt in CJ Stroud.

Oregon debuts under new head coach Dan Lanning, who led one of the all-time great defenses last season at defending champ UGA. Who does Oregon play? UGA. In Georgia at Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta. Oregon will be helmed by former Auburn QB Bo Nix. Should be an interesting game.
