Number one piston is not looking good, but the cylinder "looks" useable. how much bore is the question.....

I think the piston came apart and the impressions in the head are from bits of piston getting smashed in that portion of the combustion chamber with no room. Steel bolts would probably show impact marks on the piston and would either still be there or get wedged or mangle the valves.

I don't disagree....Why the piston "came apart" is the question.....There has to be metal chips in the pan. I might pull it off.

Just got off the phone with the best guy in my area, according to many. I used this shop many years ago with great success, (rebuilt a 72 vette 350 cu in). His price is firm at 4k....For a complete job, crank to heads installed. I was hoping to get that number down by tearing it down, but no. And, it's going to be tied up for 2 months....I looked at some replacements long blocks and by the time you get done it's close to 4k anyway. I guess if this motor and head are deemed unusable I'll change gears back to the 390.

More damage found.....Now somebody please explain how an entire bearing can come out? This is what was found in the pan, a bearing and ring bits and pieces....I've heard of spun a bearing but now, thrown a bearing has a whole new meaning!

So the head has been pounded by the metal fragments, the case cylinders are gouged, and the crank bearings failed surely needs to be turned or replaced........ Is it really worth continuing on this 6 cyl. after this.....?

No, it’s not worth it.

Originally really does not count for much on a vehicle like that.

That engine has had its day, and that day is over.

Time for a nice home for that 390 of your’n.

Thinkin, I might agree......the research now starts looking for a transmission, exhaust, etc........I do have the Cruise O Matic from the T Bird but can't find anyone to rebuild it just yet.....plus it's only a 3 sp.

You found the reason why the truck was parked. It's owner probably kept driving it after the damage occurred, the oil pump swallowed metal and sieved, and then all that shit happened. What does the oil pump drive shaft look like? I would guess that one end is stripped, or the shaft looks like a barber pole.

Note that most of the damage is on the replaceable parts- bearings, rings and pistons. Scoring of the journals and cylinders is routinely repaired by under-sizing and over-boring. Your question is best answered by your machine shop.

My vote is to rebuild the I6. These engines were under-appreciated back in the day, and that is starting to turn around due to their relative rarity. For me it's about the perfect primary and secondary balance.

Keep the FE/ Cruise-O "in the bank".

I would still get a quote on the machine work or is it included with the $4k price quoted?

I wonder if the oil pump failed and caused all of this?

None of us will know since PO was the driver.

Still playing with this motor and found a total of 27 half bearings, should be only 26.......7 main (or 14 halves), and 6 piston (or 12 halves). Pictured earlier the half ring, found in the pan appears to be like new? Why or where this half of a bearing came from is the question?

The oil pump by the way looks normally aged, nothing twisted or even metal chips on its screen.

My machine shop has come down to 2000. if I do all the reassembly. They will magnaflux and machine the block/head, cylinders and crank (if it's useable). Resurface the head, reseat the valves. I'll have them install new springs and guides, materials at my expense. With the remaining materials (rings gaskets and things) I'll probably save only a grand putting it back together myself.....

So it's the mystery of the extra bearing that may never be solved.....

My vote is to rebuild the I6. I’m a big fan of old, original, Ford trucks. Especially considering the lower rebuild price.

Maybe the previous owner dropped the pan and put in an extra half bearing for shits and giggles.

Nope, it doesn't appear to have ever been opened. No witness marks on nuts or bolts, gaskets are sealed with factory materials and painted engine blue. Only the normal tune up parts have been maintained and or changed.

I really think the extra half bearing is the culprit. It's unused and clearly dated '78. The damn thing must have been slopping around in the pan until it bounced up and hit the crankshaft bearing cap bolt...? See the small bite in it? I should be able to drop off the block and head in the next few days at the shop, then we will see if I have another anchor.....
