I was a senior in high school when Prop 13 passed in 1978. It was a huge deal back then. Unfortunately, Howard Jarvis, who spearheaded the passage didn't really think things through and made some pretty idiotic assumptions as to how lowering taxes would potentially trickle down.
Voters could have kicked Newsome out of office. They didn't. Jerry Brown took over in 1975 after Ronald Reagan and so began a slow decline. It took awhile, but one could see that the state was starting to go down the tubes, especially when many of the Aerospace and manufacturing companies pulled out due to Draconian environmental polices. You reap what you sow. When I crossed into Arizona headed for Texas in 1993, I waved goodbye in my rear view mirror, my faithful dog Chuck wagged his tail. Aside from leaving friends and family behind, I've never regretted my decision. |

The irony is all of this liberal push for "Green" energy is painting us into a corner. When you get rid of all fossil fuels and your solar + wind + hydro is not enough to support your needs, what's left?
<Insert .GIF of George W. Bush saying "nookyooler" here> Already fission power is making a big comeback in places like France, whose supply of fossil fuels from Russia has been severely impacted by the war in Ukraine. San Onofre will be back online before you know it. |

But we need the coastal cities to supply the homosexuals, actors, transgenders, drug addicts, illegals, and liberal politicians that we need to further destroy our country. Lived on the coast for 40 years. Moving away was the best move I ever made. If I never see another blue tarp, Rastafarian braid, or syringe on the sidewalk that's ok with me. And I sure don't miss the stench Patchoule oil. I'm done arguing with you. Your biased view that people stuck in their expensive homes are 'wealthy' that electricity here is reasonable, and CA is a haven for everybody rings false in my reality. A house may be worth a million dollars, but you can't sell it and buy another million dollar house without paying a huge tax hit and quadrupling your property tax bill. You either bail out or you are stuck. Me, I'm dumping my Bay Area house asap and taking the $$$ and running. If I invest it, it will be in another state. |

In the early 80's I was working at a radio station in Oxnard called Q-105. Our studios...believe it or not...were smack in the middle of a strawberry farm. One Saturday before my airshift, I heard knocking at the front door. Went to open the door and there were 7 or 8 Mexican laborers outside. One of them pointed to a green van in another field. It was an INS van hauling off illegals. I wasn't sure what to do, but the people looked genuinely terrified. So I let them in and told them to stay in the back. Mind you I was 24yo at the time and had NO IDEA how much trouble I could get into. But it was Saturday and the place was empty and I kinda felt bad for them...they were really scared. I gave a few coffee and they stayed there for about an hour. I knew the INS wouldn't come looking for them at the station so I wasn't too worried. They thanked me over and over and left.
A few days later I was walking into the station and a few of the ladies that was from that group approached me. One was a young woman and spoke fairly good English. They handed me a full flat of the most beautiful strawberries I'd ever seen and the girl said "You helped my family eat for another few months...this is the only way we know to repay you. You are an honorable man." They walked away and I was stunned. I don't know if I did a good or bad thing, but it did feel kinda good to help them out. My then girlfriend and I had strawberry shortcake and strawberry ice cream for about a month. |
