Catoosa County Trans Am
Read it. It won't kill you. It's kinda' interesting. If it's too long. Take a break. Read a little more. Take another break.
A few miles up the road from me and I remember them well. They had a speed trap setup on I-75 and would shoot radar from the overpass or behind you. They were well known to locals and brought in huge amounts of revenue for the county. They probably paid for those cars many times over. I still to this day slow down at that exit and look behind me after passing it. The cars might be worth some $$$ these days. Police equip. issued factory cars, minus a/c. I wonder how many were made for all jurisdictions...if any? Pretty rare and I imagine all were auctioned after a few yrs. or offered up to the deputies or friends first. Would be cool to find one or more. https://code3garage.com/catoosa-coun...ydcf33H3iCvsnQ |

Ahh, I remember them well. First one I ever saw I passed about two in the morning on a two lane road in my '67 Malibu. Didn't notice it until I got along side it and saw "SHERIFF" emblazoned across the door. I braked and dropped in right back behind him.
I knew the guy who did the service work on them. The '77's were all autos but the '79's were four speeds. Only way to still get the Pontiac motors. They weren't all that fast. The stick cars would only run about a buck twenty. Autos 130 or so. I know many folks who bested them in contests of speed. The last couple of pics are one that somebody found a few years ago. Plans are to restore it. The Pontiac LeMans's in the background were highly modified. They would fly! |

Went up to Ellijay, GA last week. Around Gainsville FL I see a FHP Hellcat Challanger. Don't think the MDX could outrun that.

I remember when GSP had the Mustang LX 5.0's. They were good for about a buck forty. They had a few Thunderbirds, too.

I have a Hot Rod magazine from 1979 somewhere with an article about the CHiPs using a fleet of eight 1978 Z/28's. It reported that most suffered from blown engines occasionally.

The Border Patrol Museum in El Paso has a T/A. Not sure if it was a one off or if they had several of these.

Little town in LA (Lower Alabama) called Brantley a few years ago had an early 2000's Gen IV Firebird Formula and a couple of BMW's. Don't know if they still do or not. Haven't seen any the last few times through there.

I was told a long time ago from a guy who is straight shooter that one of the GSP LX cars lit up a ZR-1 still wearing dealer plates on 400 one night and was quickly left behind. |

I had a '73 and '79 T/A. The '79 was a pig. Anything after '73 was slow and unresponsive.
