My family came here in 1969 from England.

Legal immigrants have a pretty strong incentive to avoid getting into trouble with the law. Even illegal immigrants have a 45% lower conviction rate than native-born Americans (of all races, I presume), but higher than legal immigrants .

First, set the record. I DO NOT approve of the illegals!

Heck, I don't even approve of a family member of mine, that spent their entire career working and living overseas. Only now, in retirement, to return to the US for our medical care. Yes, they paid US taxes, but all the remaining earned was spent building another Country.

The left are idiots for sure, but I'm not sure the blame entirely lies with them. My parents wanted a better life for me and I want a better life for my kids. If all our kids were doing manual labor, who would devise and design all of the conveniences you and I enjoy. At some point there's no one left to dig ditches and mow lawns, or we go without the the tens of thousands of conveniences that make us more productive and healthier. Would any of us go back in time and choose to live in early 20th century America?

Everyone wants their kids to have a good or better life than themselves. But the reality is, many (probably 1/2 or more) are not college material. They should be in trade school or an apprenticeship program.

You should read some accounts of life back then.

I do agree that trade schools would be a better option than degrees in ?????? studies or some of the BS degrees available today. But a tradesman is quite different than a landscaper or any of dozens other menial jobs. No minimum wage increase can ever make a dullard or inexperienced worker worth $15 or $20/hour.

Not around here. Our stone masons, framers, concrete guys, roofers, insulators, were mostly non-English speaking but I wouldn't call them unskilled. Their boss is always Anglo and speaks fluent Spanish. Maybe not skilled in the way you or DaveConcrete are, but they are better than the guy that sits on a rock saw or spreads mulch.

Exactly, the American dream. We are not producing enough young laborers, whether it be through education or decreased procreation. My house would never have been built without Mexicans, or I couldn't afford it. It is better in every way than any previous house I had, whether it was built by the owner in 1938 or by contractors in 1976 and 1994. The millwork in the 1938 house was truly outstanding though.
