Default 30 year old pool cage restoration complete.

Cage, floor, screen, everything has been addressed. (Note: I do have 6 tether anchors to fasten the cage to the concrete foundadion), but this project took me 5 months. I've shown some before pics before, but this cage was an abomination. EVERY fastener was rusted, some so badly that the heads were gone. The bottom aluminum rails were destroyed, dented, and again bad fasteners. The paint had faded away and was showing bare metal.

Total project expense was $5,000. Replacing the pool cage was between $35,000 and 40,000 (including the super gutter, which we did replace when the roof was done).

Improvements:
  • Both doors are brand new
  • The metal vertical and horizontal pieces framing the doors are brand new
  • All horizontal aluminum pieces resting at the base on the concrete have been replaced.
  • 1,200 fasteners have been removed and replaced, including when needing to be drilled out
  • All new fasteners are stainless steel and are painted
  • 100% of the screen is new, I did all vertical pieces
  • All remaining aluminum was sanded and painted
  • About 200 cans of duplicolor automotive paint was used. Exact match for stock aluminum
  • Floor pressure washed and painted with high quality deck paint with strong durability

Many beers were consumed during this process. All-in-all, my 30 year old cage looks brand new, is now reinforced and as strong as a ox, and cost 1/7th the cost of a new cage. Happy to be done with it.

Makes you feel good when you can say you did it yourself. Great job!

I think I’m finished with large DIY projects. I helped drywall my last house during a major remodel to cut expenses. It sure made me appreciate construction workers.

It’s nice to have enclosed pools in the south. My daughter’s neighbor has something similar and the grandkids love swimming over there bug free.

Not looking forward to doing this to our lanai but it needs it. Same deal; rusty screws and a few pieces that need to be replaced.

I'll be calling you up for pro tips on the screen mesh.

At least ours is a brown color and may be more forgiving.
