Video shows deputies race to save driver who was stuck in burning car

Thursday, December 19, 2019 10:59AM
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Deputies from the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office were quick to rescue a man trapped in his vehicle during a fire and it was all caught on camera.

It all happened around 6 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the 15200 block of Clay Road, when a 20-year-old driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a tree.

According to authorities, a sergeant was on his way home when he found the vehicle on fire and saw a wrecker driver was attempting to get in the car.

The sergeant called other deputies to the scene and used multiple fire extinguishers to temporarily slow down the flames.

"We might have to break your leg, bro, I'm sorry," a deputy tells the driver.

After the struggle, the deputy explained on bodycam that the man's pants were stuck, so he cut his pants and that's what freed him.

"You are serving a purpose on this land, dude. God was with you tonight. You understand that?" a deputy told the man.

According to authorities, the driver suffered multiple broken bones in the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is still recovering from surgery.

Link worked. Good job by the officers, but I'm struggling to understand why they couldn't get the fire under control early on. There were at least a few police vehicles there, and a coordinated strike by 2, or at most 3, fire extinguishers is pretty effecting at putting out a vehicle fire if it is caught relatively early. Later in the video, you could clearly see the headliner on fire, and pretty much nothing short of a dump of foam from a fire engine is going to stop it once it gets to that point, but it looked pretty contained to the engine compartment at the start of the video.

Not that it matters much to this incident, I'm sure no one gave a crap about the car.

I think they arrived one by one, so each guy that arrived probably emptied his cruiser's extinguisher completely on the fire. In other words, the only way you could have had a two person assault on the fire is if two cruisers arrived simultaneously. I mean, heat of the moment, you use what you've got at hand.

A good friend had a seizure while driving a double, no time for the LEO's to get there. A good Samaritan jumped in and cut him loose, saved his life. Great job in both scenarios.
