Stayed in the Netherlands this past June via airbnb. Nice retired couple, house right on the canal. I did a double take when they were showing us around the backyard. I see a basement window. 30' from the canal.

Turns out its a 1 piece basement that they hoisted into place and filled with water so it wouldn't float away. Built the house on top, then pumped out the water. Crazy
