Default tony cowboyloverdude, and other car salesholes..inside pls.

if i want to sell my cars, will dealerships just buy them from a joeschmoe like me for a decent price? like at least trade in value?

seems like that would be a much simpler way to unload a vehicle.

Yes, CarMax will buy your car straight up. They look at condition, history and market values and then will extend you an offer that is valid for 7 days.

They are better at buying cars, but not any better at giving you a good price. When I went to buy my wife a low-mileage Lexus EX350 at CarMax, she had a 2005 Volvo XC90 to trade. They offered $2K. I sold it to another small dealer for $6K. That was still less than book value, but the car had high mileage.

Yes, it is. I even got them to pull up the NADA values with the accessories and deduct for high mileage, which was about $9K retail. They wouldn't budge. You would thin that paying $6K for it and selling it for a $3K profit would be good enough...but noooo!

CarMax offered me $900 in trade, a fourth of Edmunds value. I got $4100 later that day somewhere else. They're douche-bags.

every car dealer I've dealt with (with a trade-in as part of the deal) does indeed pull out their NADA book; and then always slides over to the last column "poor condition" and says that's what it is worth on trade. I've seen this many times.

I swear I could take a 3 month old car with 100 miles on it, in 100% perfect condition, and the trade-in value would come from the "poor condition" column of the book.

If making money in the car biz was that simple, everyone would be doing it. The quick answer as to why they wouldn't budge would be that they didn't want your car and wanted you to leave in it. If you had sold it to them, they would have just run it through the auction and made a grand or two which would have offset the wholesale loss a little on whatever cars they ran through the sale.

If you compare "poor condition" NADA book value with auction prices they would be similar. The dealers that give out "good condition" values for cars with average miles don't stay in business very long.

We appraise almost everything between "rough" and "average" condition.
