The problem is, they are real valid numbers that they are spoofing. I was talking to a guy in my golf league last night, he's a cop actually, and he has been getting calls from the same outfit except the numbers show up with his cellular carrier's phone numbers. For instance, all my numbers are 417-529-xxxx and his are all 417-291-xxxx. I've not seen the same number twice, neither has he. So I'd have to block 10000 phone numbers that 50% of my local friends and businesses use. But yes, you can block numbers in iOS easy enough, but in this case they are being just downright evil. I'm just going to send every 417-529-xxxx call that doesn't show up in my contacts list to voice mail and call it a day. I even talked to another guy in my league who works for AT&T corporate in the landline division and asked if he knew where that outfit is. He said "I wish, we get tons of complaints about them."

I'm right now searching how to block spoofed numbers. I'll let y'all know if I find something that works.

Edit: It looks like there's not much I can really do right now other than just send that shit to voicemail.

I can't remember where I heard this, but supposedly if you answer their call, it somehow logs you as an "active" number and sets their system to continue calling you.

I never answer calls whose number I don't recognize, ever numbers in my same area code and prefix. Telemarketers never leave messages, so I figure if it's a legit call, they'll leave a message. I then block the number (I'm on an android).

It's like door-to-door solicitors. I never answer the door and I use my Ring doorbell to communicate. The conversation is usually four words on my part. Five if I'm feeling chatty.

Don't waste your time with these people.

You can block individual numbers with iOS, but I haven't found a way to block an entire prefix of numbers yet.

I get calls daily with my same area code & prefix, only the last 4 are different. Which still leaves 9999 different numbers to block.

Got a call yesterday. The number popped up as "Scam Likely", so I let it go to voicemail. They actually left a voicemail! The voicemail claimed to be the IRS and they had been trying to get ahold of me for 6 months. Riiiiiiiiiight.

I got one of those recently. Told the guy I was glad he called as I'd been trying to reach the IRS about my refund and could he help. Call pretty quickly exceeded his capacity for communication in English.

Sometimes I ask them if they will call back on my land line and give the the number for the local FBI office.

The"lower your interest rate" telemarketers that Cyber mentioned are criminals, just like the IRS scammers and the Indian people calling from Microsoft. I'm on the no call list. I'm not really worried about criminals making a police complaint. Obviously I wouldn't do that to someone collecting for a charity or for political purposes.

1) If a persons name does not pop up on my phone, I let it go to voicemail.

2) I check voicemail on Mondays

3) If you don't hear back from my by the following Tuesday, I am not interested.

I have a lady friend that got hurt on the job and can't do regular work. Out of desperation and not wanting to go on welfare she took a telemarketing job.....so my opinion of them has changed a bit.

I figure most of them must be pretty desperate to take a gig like that. So either I don't answer and let it go to answer, and they keep calling or I answer and ask to be taken off their call list. If they persist....the gloves come off and very loud profanity ensues.

There's a real telemarketing job and then there are outfits that use caller ID spoofing and scam people. I don't mind the former but the latter can eat a bag of dicks.

I get about 4-5 calls per day from the random numbers that are the same area code and first three digits of my phone number. If I answer there's nobody there. If I don't answer I get a 2-4 second silent voicemail.

So f'n annoying.

I was getting the calls quite regularly on both our landline and my phone. We are on Verizon and I got caller ID Name for our landline and also for my iPhone. Not one scam call since.
The APP from Verizon for my cell phone has a setting which puts the scam calls to never never land. I also like how the phone will display someones name when calling. It was only 2.99 a month and well worth it.

I've got all that but it doesn't stop the bots from calling...area code 164???? doesn't even exist!

I think the phone companies should be held responsible for who is using their system. When you call back a number and you get "this number doesn't exist" that's crap. they shouldn't have access to phone lines.

Very interesting.

Thanks for the Caller ID Name app info.

I'll have to try that.
