Default So, if you were a manager what would your take be?

Im on a meeting (3 hours now) with 12 other engineers and we are all watching one guy edit a power point presentation. Now, when I say 'edit', I mean he is literally doing nothing but aligning text and making sure all the colors are the same between slides. I would say that collectively the company is spending about $500 an hour for us to all be here. The two managers on this call just told us what great teamwork we are displaying.......What? I swear I almost hung up. Lord I cant wait to quit this job. Any other manager I ever worked for would have told 11 of us to get back to work and the one guy that created the slide being edited, and the one guy editing it, would be left to do the 'work'. We used to have an Admin assistant that did this very thing, but she was too expensive so they discontinued that position. HAHAHA! Wonder why the business hasn't made a profit in 12 years?

if you have nothing useful to say, create a power point presentation to say it with.

If the company hasn't made a profit in 12 years, how are they still in business?

If I were the manager in charge, I'd say the meeting will be rescheduled and tell everyone of the new date/time for the meeting, if truly needed, and counsel ole moron there for bringing unfinished shit and wasting everyone's time and effort.

OP, your thread reminds me of what happened to me at a conference: On of my clients (I'm a lawyer) held a mandatory conference in Hawaii. It was at the Four Seasons on Maui, so it was first-class all the way. Unfortunately, we had to pay our own way, This huge corporate client (which shall remain nameless) had hired a group to teach us "teamwork."

The first thing we did was for a group of us to form a circle; each of us was given a string that was connected to a bottle in the center of the ring. Our job was to upright the bottle by pulling our strings. However, the string worked backwards: You pull the string, and the string loosens, etc.

I put the word "teamwork" in quotes because lawyers don't do "teamwork;" we're used to working alone, and that's the way we want it. After staring at each other for a while, I finally said, "I'll bet the bar is open." About 100 lawyers from around the World, which was all of us, dropped our strings and headed for the bar.

Steve Jobs didn't allow power point presentations in meetings. He said if you can't get up and talk about the subject you are responsible for without a power point slide show, you don't belong in the meetng.

Want to have short, effective and productive meetings? Use a tall table and have no chairs in the room.

for decades the Queen (Elizabeth II) has had weekly meetings with her Privy council, to discuss secrets of the state. the meeting is always done standing up. keeps it very short.

When I was doing sales for an oxygen supply company, the corporate policy was for every local office to have a meeting at 8:00 every Monday morning and a regional conference call at 4:00 every Friday afternoon.

I quickly came to the conclusion that the only purpose for this was to assure people showed up on time on Mondays and didn't leave early on Fridays.

The nurses at the hospital I volunteer at do this at the beginning of every shift. They don't even use a room. They find an area of hallway that is not accessible to the public and they stand while meeting. They call it a huddle. It rarely takes more then 3-5 mnutes.

In the IT field, these meetings are called 'stand-ups' and are no more than 10-15 minutes long...quite effective.
