John,
I am so sad about your loss. It's something that I have nightmares about and my oldest is only 20.

I spent many years working with teens with alcohol, drug issues and some just can't escape their demons.

One thing I noticed about all those that had the toughest demons was they were some of the most sensitive, intelligent, compassionate people you would ever meet in this life.
I think that's the double edged sword. This world is too painful for them and some folks just can't understand that and sit in judgement about their "lack of self control"

I explain it like this; asking them to put down a vice is equivalent to telling somebody not to back away when they've been stuck with a knife. When the pain is that strong, you have to react.

So sorry man....
