Buy a couple of jetskis. Bad thing is they're not usable year round.

I've been riding motorcycles since I was 12. I've had countless dirt bike accidents and a total of 4 street bike accidents ( last one before this was 1986 ). Although motorcycles can be dangerous there is a thrill and a sense of freedom gotten that a car cannot replace. I still want something that gives a thrill while riding but isn't quite as dangerous.
Deets?

Note that I'll have to use some of Strats' money to buy it...

Helloooooo. Can I say doing ring and pinion gears are much more complicated than I thought. I measured the pinion depth…like 10 times, install everything, paint the ring gear and end of with this on the drive side…now to pull it all back apart and decide how much shim to take out. Any suggestions?

That’s way off. ^^^^^

What axle is that? Do you have setup bearings? Make sure you keep pressure on the carrier while turning the pinion or you’ll never get there.

Diffs are one thing that I always sent to the guy. It is an art form as far as I'm concerned. One that requires just the right amount of knowledge, experience and touch so that the thing does not explode and leave you in a stinky pile of metal chunks and fluid.

Good Luck, and I hope you can get some good guidance.

I’ve installed a lot of gears in several different axles. Having setup bearings makes it SO much faster and easier.

That's as far off as you could possibly be.
Do you dial indicator as you don't need setup paste until backlash set.
Did you shim pinion at all?

It’s an 8.5” 10 bolt, 3.42 gears, summit brand limited slip. I was using the old bearings for setup. One thing I’m thinking is maybe the tool I was using is wrong or my math sucks. Maybe I didn’t have enough pressure on the carrier. I’m going to try it again today and see what happens.

Yeah. I didn’t do the paste until after I had the backlash set. I thought I was good to good. Obviously I was wrong. I did shim the pinion.

There are some good YouTube videos on this, that’s probably the best way to learn if you don’t have someone to show you in person. Here’s one for your specific axle:

Kapler was born in Hollywood California, and is Jewish. His father, Michael, was a classical pianist originally from Brooklyn, New York, who wrote music and taught piano. His mother, Judy, is an early childhood educator at a Jewish preschool who is originally from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. They met while working in the antiwar movement of the 1960s, and moved to California in the 1970s. Kapler and his brother Jeremy attended The Country School, due to their father's position on the faculty as a music teacher.

Only fitting someone from Hollywood would coach the Giants.
