Yeh, ME.....back in the early 80's worked for a small EE company called INTEX, in Bethesda Md......I worked with the engineers in the R&D lab developing all sorts of metal detectors, mainly walk through for security, like at airports....or prisons, as an offshoot of that job I have been inside most of the large/famous prisons....with the inmates and of course guards....Attica, Lorton, etc......
then there was the other uses.....and devices, like high sense units for scanning dirt like mentioned above.....our stuff was what is known a 'pulse field' not RF.....so a lot more stable....we could ring a person down to a wedding band on a walk through basis, but for airports/etc the test piece was a 4" long piece of 1/2 diameter steel rod......like the barrel of a pistol.....so things like watches/rings/change/most belt buckles would pass..... The way our gear worked was known as 'Pulse Field'....turn on a magnetic field coil, that will energize any metal near it, then turn it off quickly and watch the nearby receiving coils for any motion/disturbance of the collapsing energy.....upsetting the balance of the coils....the high sense units used a higher frequency of operation, and a much tighter 'gate' on the receive end....the weapon detectors used much lower freq and a long 'wait' time on the gate |

Me.
35 years hunting for civil war relics. I've found hundreds of bullets, buttons, live artillery shells, coins, etc...plus a lot of junk. Are you thinking of buying a machine? Watching some of the yt vid's persuaded me to try 'magnet fishing'. I ordered one last week. I'll hit our local rivers and creeks with it. |

Don't now but thought of it. I live on a large lake (Actually a reservoir) and the beach area can go from a couple feet to a couple hundred yards as the water drops.
Even without a detector have found all sorts of stuff over the years at low water times. (Sept to Dec!) Have see people mostly at the public part of the lake looking for things. Most places on the lake have their own private beech and dock. |

My son has a toy metal detector that he left behind when he moved out. I have used it to find a variety of metal things I have dropped on the lawn. It actually works pretty well for finding the nails and screws and stuff that will screw up someone's feet if they are walking around barefoot.

My advice to all new users is to get a good, but, simple machine. Garrett makes some great machines, but, they can get REAL complicated for a new user to setup, understand the terminology, and to actually use. I've used Whites, Fisher, Tesoro, and a couple of others that are no longer in biz. My favorite has always been a Fisher. The quality is great, simple to use, great depth. People have been talking a lot about the Nokto Simplex. I think it would be a great starter detector or one of the Minelab Vanquish series. These all get good depth, but, simple to use for the new guys. https://www.noktadetectors.com/metal...etal-detector/ https://www.minelab.com/vanquish-series |

They are old tech. Too many new tech and improved machines on the market today to buy one of those.
I own 3 Fisher machines. If I bought anything else it would be the Nokto or Minelab. Huge coils, great frequencies for relics (the cheaper machines use a low freq. and can't go as deep) the higher freq. and higher priced machines go deeper. Anyone buying one should check out Bass Pro or a retailer that WILL let you return it. Some won't let you return them and you are stuck with it. Beginners really need a turn on, beep, and go machine. The other machines you really need to understand - threshold, discriminate, sensitivity, and other things to fine tune one for hunting. |
