Default Home appliances

Looking to upgrade the kitchen appliances - the more research I do, the more confusing it is.

WTH are there so many damn models? I want to go with a range, fridge, dishwasher, otr microwave package if that gets me a better deal.

Are there any manufacturers/models you guys would stay away from ? Any you would recommend? I don't want to go broke on something like this, just something that looks nice and fulfills its duties with no worries of breaking down in a couple years.

I've had good luck with Sears appliances.

There are other brands on this site too.

I purchased Whirlpool fridge, stove and micro and a Bosch dishwasher based on recommendation of an engineer I worked with who had worked at Maytag. They had competitors products for evaluation.

I bought a Bosch Dishwasher less than a year ago and it's already giving us problems. Matter of fact, the first one we purchased (from Lowes) was returned within a week for a bad pump. Not happy with it at all...

I have GE Profile kitchen appliances, they've lasted for 10 years without a problem.

Do not get Frigidaire. I repeat: Do not get Frigidaire.

Cliffs:
FasterTraffic buys very expensive stainless, counter-depth Professional Series refrigerator.
Refrigerator works for a bit more than three years.
Refrigerator stops keeping things cold like refrigerators are supposed to do.
FasterTraffic sees this as a minor inconvenience.
FasterTraffic looks up the authorized service vendor for Frigidaire in his area.
Over the next five weeks, service vendor plays musical parts.
FasterTraffic sees this as a complete clusterf**k.
Service vendor declares stainless, counter-depth Professional Series refrigerator "unrepairable."
FasterTraffic calls Frigidaire Customer Service, who tells FasterTraffic to take a hike.
FasterTraffic tells Frigidaire Customer Service he was perfectly willing to pay for repair but a dead fridge is unacceptable.
FasterTraffic intends, with much fanfare, to dump the dead fridge on the lawn outside Frigidaire headquarters.
Frigidaire Customer Service has a change of heart.
Frigidaire Customer Service gives FasterTraffic $400 towards a new Frigidaire refrigerator.
FasterTraffic is not placated and declares lifetime jihad against Frigidaire.

we are considering doing the same thing right now. fridge, range, dishwasher.

I am seriously looking at Samsung. Really only because they look nice and have that smart touchscreen internet connection thingy that looks like it could keep me occupied for a few minutes. saw it on celebrity apprentice last season.

I have a gas stove with 5 burners. The center burner has a griddle on it and it gets used almost daily. The oven has the convection feature, which is really nice. If I was looking or a new stove, those would be my must haves.

My fridge is one of those models with the French doors and the freezer on the bottom. It does dispense water, and has an ice maker, but not through the doors. While I do like he configuration of this fridge, I'd rather not have to open the fridge or freezer to get water or ice.

Both are GE.

I could care less about the ice/water thingy...I have had those and every single one has eventually given me issues. However, I do like the freezer on the bottom idea since - due to simple physics - seems more like a more logical design

The freezer is useable, and has sliding drawers, so you can easily access stuff. Unless of course, you pull the drawer off it's tracks...

Stay away from Sammy fridges, guy next door has been having issues with his water filter, it's a nasty SOB and expensive as hell.....

I"m a believer in Whirlpoole appliances, but have to say my Maytag d/w I bought off CL for 100 bux has been good, in 7 years only a handle latch assy, for 20 bux....

I try to get everything with mechanical timers, less electronicus crappicus, especially in this lightening generating platform we live on.....although the d/w has been fine, I have to admit....my fridge is a top freezer 33 wide.....think it has Sears on it, but it's whirlpoole.....gas range is GE, it's a PIA for the igniters I gave up and put sparkplugs in place of them 35 buck EACH igniter....hell with it, wife just uses a 4 buck BBQ lighter wand....KISS....

These days I'd almost shop by warranty, whoever offers the longest, most thourough coverage wins. After that pretty much all of them all seem to offer stuff in black, white and beige...

The big issue with todays appliances it this. Some years ago someone said "look, we can increase our profit if we use these identical compressor/pump/widget that we can get from our off-shore supplier at XX% less decreasing our cost per unit". Everyone rejoiced at the anticipated increase of profit resulting in a big, fat bonus for everyone. But, alas, the profits actually went down. We must do a study they all said. The result was .... increased warranty repair/replacements ate up all of the savings and then some. What will fix this they asked? We will just shorten the warranty period and get back our profits. And they all rejoiced. So, now I figure the cost of an extended warranty on anything that has a pump/compressor or widget in it.

I'm not usually an extended warranty guy but, for refrigerators, I'm all over it. Go figure that Frigidaire #2 needed warranty service. (F**k you, Frigidaire.)
