I'm good with Binary and Hexidecimal, though. Funny, huh?

There are, but then you have some math to do before you can start using the charts properly.

Most fun I have ever had flying was in sailplanes. My dad flew them and the club he belonged to owned a two seater Schweitzer that he would take me up in. Knowing what conditions generate thermal updrafts and coming into them at low altitudes and then riding them up was a real trip.

I'm actually doing well, believe it or not. Our homework is generated from actual FAA questions and we get random questions every time we take the homework quizzes. After a set time, we can no longer retake them for higher grades (only highest counts). After that, the quizzes are opened back up for practice so we can study for the tests (part 1 coming up in two weeks using FAA format).

I've been doing them over and over until I get 90% or better and by then have seen most of the questions for that section or seen them repeated multiple times. I just took the quiz on the take off distances (roll out, 50' clearance, all based on weight, temp, atmospheric pressure) and got a 96% on it, but only 12 questions so obviously, I'll be doing it again.

the hardest part is using the charts and having to use the best guess on some numbers because the point you're looking at doesn't exactly match up with a horizontal or vertical grid line intersection. The FAA wants exact numbers so you could be off by 1" on center of gravity in either direction or a fraction of an inch and still get it wrong. Same with the lessons taught last night.

I'll figure it out, but I'm doing well.

DJ...it is basic math dude! Trust me, I'm as far from a math person as you can get, but it's pretty easy. It is all repetitive though. Kind of like using the manual flight "computer" ie: ziz wheel. Once you have that down, it only takes a few minutes to calculate everything for your X countries etc. Just like talking to ATC. First time I flew, I was like WTF are they talking about. After a minute, it was second nature.

The hardest part was getting CG, Moment, ARM on a diagram with two weights on a board with a fulcrum. I am better with it, but the other stuff when I use the charts I'm dead on. The graphs...well, i'm close since I have to guestimate some calculations and the FAA questions want exact answers. The instructor said it's a known flaw in the stesting system especially since the aircraft that have weight/moment charts usually say to round up or down to the nearest whatever they designate.

In a few weeks, the CFI's are doing surveys with the FAA to give pros and cons of the written tests, oral exams (not the knooger kind), and the check rides. So far, he states that all of the instructors he knows along with himself want the tests to match more closely to real life situations when it comes to accuracy...the CG graphs in the FAA pilot's book and Airman's Knowledge Testing Supplement being one of the biggest complaints.

Either way, I've been reading a lot and taking the quizzes over until I get sick of them which keeps my post count down in here You're welcome.

How do you like flying the 172's? Every bit of my flying was in PA-28 Piper Warriors. They are anemic, but VERY predictable. Coming up on a stall, they would do everything but smack you in the head and say lower my nose and give me power. Shook like a leaf on a tree...

I won't start getting in the air until about April time frame when the semester ends and the college goes to summer hours (I only work 4 days a week then). The flight school is open every day except holidays, though.

And yes, I've opted to pay more to learn in the 172.
