I have a Delta Skymiles AmEx credit card (not debit). I use it for everything. Business expenses, personal expenses, gas, day care bill, $10 Home Depot runs, $5 value meals at Wendy's.. Everything... I took out $100 in cash 2-3 weeks ago and still have $73 of it in my wallet (just checked). All of our billing is done online as well.

The card is paid off to a zero balance every month though. We never carry a balance.

That being said i always ask if there is a cash discount. I have no problem going to the bank to get cash if i get a better deal.

Same here. I got a GM card a long time ago. I maxed out the incentives on it - $3000 off any GM vehicle, plus any other offers. I got a Disney card 2 yrs. ago. I now have $800 free dollars to spend at Disney World. I will look for a cash back card. I keep mine paid off every month. Knock on wood...I have never paid a penny in interest or other charges.

That's key. If you're paying it off every month, it's really no different than writing a check. You just use one check instead of ten. Carrying a balance in order to get rewards doesn't really make sense.

Another thing: It's money I would spend anyway. We spend several hundred dollars a month just at Costco, for example. That doesn't change whether we use a credit card or not. Why not get a perk out of it?

Debit is unreliable...I got into a situation last year, I had 2 gas cans for the shop, one I fill with 93 100% fuel for 2 strokes, one I fill with 87 E10 for riders, and then On a 3rd transaction, I was going to fill up my truck. Unfortunately, my bank decided to shut off my card due to "suspicious activity"....which was me buying gas 2 times. So the card, as it sat, was worthless, as an ATM card, or as a debit card. Thankfully I had 10 bucks cash in the ashtray and was able to get enough gas to get me home, the truck was bobbin on empty and I was about 20 miles from home.
You have some valid points and this is a thing of pure personal preference so none of us is right and none of us is wrong. FWIW, I did have a lowlife stick a gun in my ribs demanding money, he lost. 'nuff said.

Use my CC a lot, just about anything over $10 I now put on card. I would rather write the 2 checks to the 2 CC companies than write a bunch of checks.

I pay in full each month and get points that I normally use for cards I can use for other things.

I did say credit cards as I totally refuse to have/use debit cards as I do not trust them.

Funny how times have changed, as a buzzzzzzzy remodeling contractor up north, I carried a minimum of 1500 bux on me at any given time, sometimes that went to 2500 bux, now ex needed grocery money no sweat out came a couple of hundred bux bills.....BFD......

Today, it is SO much easier to just swipe the debit card and hell with it.....

couple months ago there was an incident at a store, bought 32.08 or goods, and so they swiped the card, didn't go through....computer glitch....so they swiped it again....and my bank site said double billing, went back to the store, and the owner went to the back room to tab his results for the day, and sure enough 32.08 popped up on the day's tickets, he gave me back outta the register, as I recall, the man's inventory and control was OUTSTANDING!!!!! he knows every damn dime in and outta the joint.....I joked just yesterday as he swiped the same card, and I inquired if it would go through twice, we shared a good laugh over it.....

NOW here is the negative about it.....My CU, used to have ATM s that ate the card, you did your business, then the card was spit back, and it was super easy to walk away and leave the card in the slot.....so someone watched my PIN number, and sure enough I walked away....as having done it about a dozen times before...damnit.....

so the bastards hit me for 200 bux.....

NOW, the ATM does not eat the card, push in and withdraw, like a normal card reader.....IF I thought I could make money by pushing in a withdrawing on a rapid basis, it would be like having SEX.....

I use my GM credit card for as much as I can in order to get the cash back on the purchase of a new GM car. Like when I bought my vette there were no discounts but I did get $1200 off through my GM card.

They saw you had $1200 on your GM card in their database and decided to force you to use them instead of offering the $2000 rebate they gave everybody else.

Debit card. It kind of sucks. I never have a physical penny to my name.

99% of the time it's AMX, then it's paid in full when the bill comes.

I got my 2012 year end summary last month.

Credit at grocery stores and gas stations for the points.

I do carry a couple hundred in cash at all times.

Cash here. Cancelled our AMEX years ago. I figure we've saved a couple grand by now on that deal over the years. I need the money worse than AMEX. Have a Debit card for online purchases and paying bills. Write one check a month, balance the checking account once a month, always know to the penny where we're at.

We noticed our expenses dropped substantially when we went on the cash only program. As in, the green stuff. If I totalled up the savings over the last decade, it'd make any rewards program look like a nickel and dime game. Serious.
