Looting, Vandalism After Vigil for Missouri Man Killed by Cop

Protests broke out overnight on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, with vehicles and businesses damaged and looting reported, following the police shooting of Michael Brown, 18.

People could be seen carrying hubcaps out of an auto supply store. A shoe store also was looted, with police swarming into the store's parking lot. A QuikTrip convenience store was overrun, with people grabbing items and running out of the store, glass shattered and items strewn about the sidewalk.

A fire later broke out, destroying the QuikTrip store.

Other witnesses reported seeing people vandalize police cars and kick in windows in the St. Louis suburb.

Police in riot gear stood on the street, trying to keep the situation under control. Police dogs were also brought to the area.

The protests followed a candlelight vigil for Brown, who wasn’t armed when he was shot Saturday. At the vigil, people placed candles, flowers and a teddy bear at the exact location where Brown was killed. One group of young men broke off to spray paint "R.I.P. Michael" on the street.

Demonstrators held their hands up in protest -- reflecting a witness’s statements that Brown had his hands up when he was shot by police.

“No justice, no peace,” demonstrators yelled.

St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley called for a peaceful dispersal following Sunday’s protests.

“Just need people to keep calm and [disperse] so no one gets hurt,” Dooley wrote.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the shooting occurred after an officer encountered two people -- one of whom was Brown — on the street near an apartment complex in Ferguson.

Belmar said a struggle began inside the officer’s squad car and spilled into the street, where Brown was shot multiple times. Police later said at a news conference that they “cannot say” how many times the unarmed teen was struck.

"Was the other subject, the deceased, the 18-year-old, armed with a handgun or rifle or any type of weapon at the time? The answer to that is no," Belmar said.

The Ferguson police officer involved has been put on leave as St. Louis County Police investigate the incident.

St. Louis 21st Ward Alderman Antonio French -- who posted video of Sunday night’s frenzy online -- told ABC News that anger from the shooting "boiled over," and that residents want a full investigation into Brown’s death.

“I think it's too many men, especially young, black men, who feel like, you know, that they don't have equal citizenship and that the relationship between them and the police is adversarial and that they're on the losing end, and that their lives are not valued," French said.

“We have a lot of work to do as a greater community, black and white, to come together to let these young men know that they are a part of the community and that we have a place for them.”

“He was good kid and they did that to him for no reason,” Brown’s grandmother Desiree Harris said.

Pretty much. I'd move outta there and less their mess right there. Let them have the mess they created.

Wonder if they feel like they got their money's worth of alcohol, sporting goods, and twinkies from this guy's death.

Rule 1 - If you don't wanna get shot, don't do illegal stuff.
Rule 2 - Assaulting a cop likely falls undo that illegal stuff.
Rule 3 - You don't have to be carrying a gun to be considered a deadly threat. You don't have to be armed to get shot if you pose that threat.

I remember the '68 riots in DC. flew over them in a Twin Bonanza owned by my g/f's brother, so 4 of us went up and viewed the fired one late evening.....back when we could fly over DC......and the sad thing is the total destruction of several city blocks/streets, and it was decades before anyone dared rebuild shit.....dunno that it's rebuilt today in some spots, really.....businesses moved out of the area, most notable was Herson's Eigth and O a fance import car dealer, all European and sad to see all the totally destroyed showroom and adjacent new car storage burnt to the ground.....today it would be a billion bux.....and that is just ONE business that left forever.....and in very few years it led to the red lining of those regions for TV service calls.....krazy......

By the numbers; He was a good boy. He was black and therefore did absolutely nothing wrong. They did not have to shoot him; they did not have to shoot him that many times.


Sounds like the people in that hood were looking for an excuse to do some ghetto shopping, (AKA rioting and looting.) The race hustling reverends (and I use the term reverend very loosely) will stir things up even more. These people just proving again that their version of black culture sucks big time.

Some friends of mine worked on a video shoot about a year ago working with some inner city kids from Chicago. I can't remember what it was for, but they took a bunch of these kids who had never been out of the hood before and took them to a farm.
My friend said that several of the kids asked "where are the liquor stores"? When told there weren't any liquor stores in the area the kids then asked "well, where do you go to buy candy and sodas"?
The only businesses these kids had ever seen were liquor stores.

I grew up not far from Ferguson and Darrin works in a neighboring community. What happened last night is scary. I am afraid of the backlash if the findings show that the cop did not use unnecessary force. How many of the surrounding areas will see rioting/looting, etc. The family has hired the same attorney that handled the Treyvon Martin case.
I received a text from a friend that works for a local credit union. A branch they have in a neighboring community - Dellwood was hit last night. Windows broken, they tried to steal and ATM and they did steal all of the computers.
Also posted on a thread by one of my friends on Facebook, someone looked the kid up on casenet and in the 6 months since he's been an adult he's been arrested 4 times for felonies. Really. good. kid.
Also reported to a co-worker is that there is a threat that 'whiteys houses gonna get looted tonight' or something to that effect.
I am so happy that we do not live near North St. Louis County but the fact that Darrin works so close and that I drive through North City (a very bad area) to get to work has me pretty uneasy.
