Anyone ever get shocked and collapse?
Watched my little brother get thrown across the basement as kids, when he stuck his GD finger into the new circuit panel.....
The look on our faces was priceless! We did some dumb shit! |

I played with an electric pump and could not get it to work again. Dad played with it and when he had his hand on the pump he touched the vise on the work bench. It needed to be grounded. I learned a few new words that day.

I once went to the corner store, (aged 8-10?) had a huge handful of change in my hand, ready to pay for the deli meats. I leaned over and touched the scale, BOOM! My arms flew up and all the change went flying! The owner started crackin up, of course I cried!
Shit hurt manz! |

Not here. Experienced several serious jolts of electricity but it has yet to put me down. An impact to the head can put me down on one knee occasionally but it took a baseball bat to lay me out.
Also went prone once when hit in the head by several shotgun pellets but that was by choice (digging for China ). Was like being punched. The ft-lbs of each pellet is small but it turns out the felt effect is cumulative... No penetration, just some nice welts and a nasty headache for the rest of the day. |

Negative 1000 volts once, power supply on a nuclear scanner. Fortunately very low amps. When I was staggering around the tech asked if I was okay, told her that if I was still alive in 5 min, then yes I was okay.

Back in 1983 I was tuning up a customer's '76-'78 Chrysler Cordoba with the 360 and distributor in the back of the engine near the firewall. It was a cold damp morning, and I grabbed the dist. cap to adjust the timing. I leaned against the fender with my crotch area and the shock when from the ignition wires in my right hand and grounded through to the fender through my genitals. It killed the engine, and my right elbow and gonads hurt like HELL for the next two days. Some moron had used a needle-pointed test light to check the wires previously and had left a hole in the insulation boot on each wire. Asshole.

Only 110v several times for me. Worked with 480v and 600v 3-phase, but thankfully never zapped.

I used to get hit at least once a month with about 30 kv.....stored like a crapassitor by the olde tyme Cathode Ray Tubes of color TV sets....sometimes even after what I thought was discharging the tube....ZENITH TV's were infamous for doing that....
much less the ~400 VDC on the main line B+ they used to call it, with large electrolytic crapass itors holding a charge......with enough power to knock one off the bench seat...... then to get into the megawatt tube power amps for high power stereos.... yah buddy....across the room, get up shake off, and get back to work..... |

Another trick I liked to do was back in elementary/Jr. hi screwal.....go to the local .mil surplus electronics store all this about mid 50's time period....and buy an old 28 volt power transformer, run it through rectumflyer tubes and some large heavy filter capacitors.......making 28 Volts of decent amps...then run it into an old Genset used for powering up portable transmitters for field communications....let it wind up WAY high with no load, take a long well insulated wire and use it like a whip, to flash the end to the chassis ground......and the resulting ARC would be up to 2' long as the genset would wind down with a screeching sound.......

I was at Home Depot the other day picking up some wall sockets for the house. There was a lady in the same section looking for a light switch, so I was helping her find the right one. She looked in my cart and said:
"My goodness you have a lot of wall plugs in there...did something happen? "Oh no...I am just switching out all the dumb child-resistant plugs for normal ones." "But what happens if a child puts his finger in and gets a shock?" "Well, I have no children in my house, but if I did they'd get shocked and learn never do it again. Worked pretty well for me and dad would always get a laugh." The look on her face was just ghastly. I make friends everywhere I go. |

Years ago I worked for Pan Am. We had a flight land from JFK and it had just flown thru a nasty storm. As it was pulling to the gate I reached for the access door for the APU plug. As I was the first one to touch the plane, I discharged the static electricity from the plane. I ended up 10 feet or so flat on my back with blisters on the ends of my fingers. Lesson? Always make sure the grounding straps were in place before touching the plane. Or at least being the first one to touch the plane.
