One involves a superheterodyne circuit.

Both AM and FM stations generate a carrier wave. The AM station sends the music, etc. by changing (modulating) the amplitude of the carrier wave. The FM station sends music, etc. by changing (modulating) the frequency of the carrier wave. AM waves have a longer wavelength and lower frequency so they can be bounced off the ionosphere so they can be broadcast over a longer distance. That is why when I was young we could listen to stations much farther away after sundown. That is also why CB'ers can sometimes reach great distances with their radios. FM waves have a shorter wavelength and higher frequency so they travel right though the ionosphere making them "line of sight" waves that don't reach you if you are beyond the curvature of the earth. (Sorry flat earthers -- if it was truly flat you would receive every FM signal anyplace on the earth!) Lightning and electrical disturbances have a bigger effect on a waves amplitude so they bother AM more than FM. Try listening to an AM radio near fluorescent lights or any other place where a spark is rapidly generated. Old cars with only AM radios had longer antennas due to the longer wavelength of AM and FM, with its shorter wavelengths needed shorter antennas so most later model cars have the shorter antennas than the old model cars.

Hold on a second there smarty pants, I was told by some other smart pants people that the earth was flat. What all this curvature of the earth nonsense? |
