The noise is coming from the torque converter. Took off the access plug, no sign of fluid. Everything looks OK, nothing loose that we can tell. But that exactly were it's coming from. Johnny described it as a flutter.

Took the Squirrel to a Vette friend who is a mechanic. Torque tube bearing is going bad and making the rattling noise. Looks like Sat we will be dropping the rear end and changing the torque tube bearings.

That sucks. I guess this means you'll be cutting back on the hole shots.

Just make sure the Squirrell is up on a lift or jackstands(well supported) when you put it in gear and try to listen. You're nice and slim Wendy, but not slim enough to go hanging upside down under the Squirrell with a scope in your ear.

You owe me 1 dozen oatmeal cookies for my expert diagnosis.
Glad you got it figured out, fixed, and back in shape Wendy.

Finally have time to post those pics of the bad torque bearing change.

The noisy culprit right here!

The bad bearing was corroded.

Putting her back together

Did you see any signs of water getting in there to cause this?

That's what is strange. No sign of water, condensation or corrosion - except right there a the bearings and spiles!?! Still trying to figure that one out.

Here on the bolts opposite side of bearing housing

And here

Strange, glad you got it fixed. Thanks for the pics, it helps me understand how it connected for a possible future upgrade.

Thanks for the pics. I read the entire thread and took notes - filed away for future references. Nice job. Moderator: sticky this, please.

Done!

Some other Notes for ya'll:
We ended up removing the entire torque tube assembly in order to get the torque shaft out. Did not want to come out. Took some forceful coercion.

Something I learned that I did not know - C6 Automatic transmissions have the service port on the bottom back side of the tranny. Were as manual's servicing ports are on the top forward portion.
