Should I buy a generator?

First storm for me in VA. Went thru a ton of them in FL.

How is the power company about restoring power? Would the $600 for a generator be a good investment? I can go a day or two but I don't want to be w/o for a week or two....Im getting old.

Best thing I ever did the day before Isabel hit. We were without power in VA Beach for 11 days. Saved all of our perishable foods in two fridges and freezers. Even shared power with the old family next door.

Everyone was out of stock two days before when a manager at Home Depot told us to be back first thing the next the morning because a whole truck load of gens was due in. Coleman Powermate 6250.

I went and picked on up last night. Home Depot and Lowes had trucks delivering pallets of them. When the hurricanes of 2004 hit Florida I was without power for 13, 9, and 4 days in about a month and a half stretch. Do not want that again.

Funny thing is they were out of gas cans. I drove all over town and finally Lowes had a truck deliver a bunch of pallets of 5 gallon cans. I think there were 70+ people in line for those can.

We're all set up and it looks like it will be a direct hit...Im feeling good about my investment.

I used all of my gas in the cans before we could get out of our neighborhood to a gas station. I was prepared though, I had all of the cars full and a good siphon hose. I was good for quite a few weeks.

Not sure if we're staying this time, or hooking up the camper and hauling ass!

Don't wait too long if you decide to head out b/c the traffic is gonna be a bitch! I64 is getting bad thru Hampton Roads.
