I'm reminded of the wisdom of my daughter, the doctor. She told me that one of the cardinal rules of medicine was:

"When someone's having a cardiac arrest, the first thing to do is check your own pulse and blood pressure".

Loosely translated, she meant, when everyone around you is shouting and running around crazy, make sure you've got your shit together before acting. While the S&P was bottoming today, I checked my nut sack, found the contents intact and sat tight. If I see the .VIX peaking, I've got a megabuck to throw at the problem.

i've been keeping an eye on my company's stock price today...it was fine up until about 3pm...Did something happen at 3? <new release or anything?> From 3-4 it went up a bit, then dropped nearly 8% in a matter of half an hour....WTF is going on?!

My 401(k) probably did exactly as the market did. I'm in index funds exclusively. That's okay. Allegedly I still have at LEAST 25 years to go before I'm retire-able.

At 3 the President went on TV to tell the media that it didn't matter what S&P said, he still thinks we're a AAA country.

The stock market plungs was caused mostly by fears for the European economy, then by our own bad economy. The S&P downgrade was simply "icing on the cake".

Harry, my man, hang in there. I know you know this, but leave the emotions at the door. They have no place in investment decisions. Your experience and knowledge will guide you and you will likely come out of this in a much better position.

Hang in there...better days to come (of course, it remains to be seen if they will be proceeded by worse ones!).
