Default Photo ID & Voting

Was removed from the budget bill in Ohio as the ACLU threatened a lawsuit over the issue.

Ohio issues a photo ID card, ~$8.50.

Opponents claim it's discriminatory but you're required a gov't issued photo ID to obtain certain gov't wealth redistribution benefits e.g. food stamps.

Can someone please give me an intelligent answer as how/why this is discriminatory? I don't understand.

For the R v D debate, the Ohio Secretary of State is an R and also opposed to it.

If you have to pay anything, it's akin to a poll tax.

A stretch, but there's no way you'd get away with it if it went all the way to SCOTUS.

OUR ELECTION INTEGRITY IS WORTH CHECKING ID. States MUST combat this weakness by using a lesser evil than vote fraud - means testing for purposes of issuing IDs and granting them to impoverished citizens for free on the tax payers' dime.

Better to spend $8.50 a head on the Democrat's constituency and have Republicans win a legit election than lose in a fraud and pay them THOUSANDS a head thanks to Democratic theft and wealth redistribution.

if you can't muster up the eight fifty...

you probably shouldn't be voting in the 1st place.

I agree.

I would suggest we provide them for free.

That would be one solution.

However, I have a real problem with Florida's new program. I had to get my license renewed last month and you can't just walk in and pay for one anymore.

I had to provide -

My passport or birth certificate.

An original SS card and a 1099

And two pieces of mail from the utility companies proving I lived at my address.

This last part proved problematic. The utilities were set up by my spouse so none of them were in my name. I had to actually have her come into the DMV and sign a form verifying that I lived with my wife.

What kind of shit is that?

The gal at the DMV told me she has had to turn away dozens of people who rent with utilities included and can't prove they live where they say they do. Some get letters from their land lords verifying they live at an address but others who are not on the lease have no way of proving their address. Many low income people in Florida are now driving on expired licenses because they can't prove where they live.

They say they do it in the name of security but it sure smacks of the old Jim Crow laws to me.

We don't have to prove where we live. But we have to provide all that other crap. Not sure how I feel about that actually. I don't think I like it.

Hell my military ID doesn't even work.

I do agree being required to provide ALL of that information is overkill.

Anyone happen to have a link to the law that spells out what is required to get a FLDL issued (new or renewed)?

Yup. And because she hadn't had her license renewed recently and been "verified" by the state before, she had to provide her birth certificate SS card and the utility bills too.

They didn't just look at the documents, they scanned them and attached them to my DMV digital file.

Took three trips to the DMV to get my license.

What is the dem plan to ensure non eligible voters do not vote? What steps do they propose that people only vote once?

What steps are they proposing that me and my vote are not disenfranshised?

Or is this just anger directed at those who are attempting to ensure people don't commit voter fraud?

dems have no plan

here is mine:

you show up with a certified copy of a deed to property located in the USA...

you don't own property...you don't have a piece of the rock...you don't get to elect those who make the rules for living on the rock.

watch the map turn red

Ah yes, that way we can assure that all those active duty military bums living in base housing or deployed fighting your wars can't vote. After all they have no "Piece of the Rock".

Another great example of deep thinking.

I would settle for a copy of their tax returns. No pay, no play. I don't care if you are military either!

If you went your route I'm afraid it would suddenly become much more difficult to own land.

Really, Phil, it sounds to me like predictable "unintended consequences" of poorly thought-out legislation.

Not necessarily.

We've still got a small but significant fraction of citizens who don't have bank or investment accounts. My company has most of us on direct deposit, but there are still 15 people who get a check, because they refuse to trust banking institutions and won't open an account.

So theoretically, you can be working; not have a bank account or other account that generates current statements; and also not be receiving any current Federal or State paperwork either.

Rare combination but possible.

5 years in the Reserves, 6 years active duty officer... stationed at times overseas. Being moved every year or 2 and constantly deployed it never made financial sense to buy a house so I rented.

Just to clarify your statement, you don't think I should be allowed to vote. Correct?

And those that owned a house, but need to move out because their original house sold, but the house they are building is not ready yet?

And those that choose to save money by living in an apartment so they can save up an appropriate down payment on a home rather than financing the whole thing?

And those that go through a divorce, lose their house and move in with a friend or family while they get their life back together?

And those that live in Joplin, MO and just had their home destroyed by a tornado?
