Week 1 College Football Game Day Thread

After a little appetizer last weekend with "week zero" match-ups featuring Notre Dame and USC taking on cup-cakes, we're kicking off the 2023 college football season for real with a long, glorious, 5 day weekend of football games.

The action kicks off tonight (Thursday) and we're in for a treat with the Florida Gators heading out West to take on the #14 Utah Utes. This is a rematch of last season's opening game between the two, when the Gators took down the Utes in a close one that had major ramifications for Utah and the PAC all season long. UF @ #14 Utah is on ESPN at 8pm EST this evening.

But before we look ahead to the rest of this weekend's action, let's revisit the major shake-up to the college football landscape that started to take shape this offseason.

In a thinly-veiled ploy to add more cupcake games to Ohio State and Michigan's schedules, the B1G Ten, mere months after forming an "alliance" with the PAC, promptly stabbed the PAC in the back and stole USC and UCLA. That's whack. The B1G has now followed up with another heist, snagging Washington and Oregon.

(side note: USC picked up right where they left off in Week 0 against San Jose State - productive offense led by consensus future #1 pick QB Caleb Williams, SUSPECT defense).

In addition, Colorado has decided to go running back into the Big XII's loving arms. A panicked Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah quickly decided to follow them.
SMART DECISION. Remember the golden rule - he who panics first, wins (-Sun Tzu, probably).

Washington State, Oregon State, Cal, Stanford - you forgot the golden rule.

Back to the games this weekend, aside from UF-Utah tonight, we get the debut of Matt Rhule led Nebraska on the road against B1G foe Minnesota.

Friday night is a bit thin, but Louisville @ Georgia Tech could be a fun ACC match-up if both teams show up.

Saturday, the interesting games are well spread out. At Noon EST we'll get our first taste of Tennessee's incredible offense with a new starting QB under center - the old starting QB, Michigan transfer Joe Milton, who lost the job EARLY to Hendon Hooker last season, now in the NFL. Milton and UT's offense played well in the bowl game, and we'll get a chance quickly to see them operate against a Power 5 D. Also at Noon EST we get the debut of Deion Sanders-led Colorado, against 2022 runner-up TCU whom we last saw getting steamrolled by the Dawgs.

West by God Virginia takes on #7 Penn State in Happy Valley under the lights, and #21 UNC and South Carolina meet, yet again, in Charlotte, NC for a season opening neutral site game. UNC is once again led by consensus #2 pick QB Drake Maye, and South Carolina is once again led by the resurrected Spencer Rattler, who came on strong for the Gamecocks at the end of last season in some huge wins over Tennessee and Clemson.

On Sunday Night we get a Top 10 match-up and a re-match of last year's thrilling opening match-up between #5 LSU and #8 FSU. On Monday night we get #9 Clemson back in action against Duke.


REJOICE - Everything is right in the world once more.
