Those dudes have real class!! Edit...While I was listening to it a minute ago, my youngest son (15yo) heard it in his bedroom. He came out and was like, you listening to a little "Take 5"? I told him yep. Sort of funny, he loves playing heavy metal on his guitar, and that is his mainstay, but he loves jazz. I can probably thank my cousin for exposing him to a lot of that.

I saw Brubeck live when I was about 30. It was my introduction to Jazz, which I enjoy to this day.

My mind sees scenes from an old B&W movie when I hear that...or a magic act.

Several years ago a close friend gave us tickets to a Brubeck concert at a small college near here. He appeared very feeble as he came on stage. With a little help he got seated at the piano but when he started to play, it was like he was 40 years old again.
The music department at the college has an outstanding jazz program. Their "1 O'Clock Lab Band" has release numerous albums, has several Grammy nominations, etc. Part way through the concert, Brubeck invited them on stage and did several arrangements with them. What an honor for those kids and what a cool think for Brubeck to do. Very high on my list of concert experiences. Thanks for posting this... |

Normally, the Tenor Sax is my favorite. But here's Gerry Mulligan, easily the greatest Baritone Sax player who ever lived and Paul Desmond of the Dave Brubeck Quartet on Alto Sax playing "Blues in Time" in 1957. This is some of the smoothest stuff I've ever heard, and I heard it for the first time just a few years ago. If you like Brubeck, you'll like this.
