Default May 3rd 1999 Tornado

For those of you that may not remember, this was a horrible day in OK in 1999. This super system produced over 72 tornadoes that day, one of them being an F5 tornado. Over 40 people were killed and 600+ injured.

I lived through my first tornado when I was 9, one hit our home in Maryland (which seldom gets tornadoes). When we moved to OK in 1988, I was terrified to be in Tornado alley. In this video you can clearly see why I fear these things!

The power is terrifying, nature is truly a thing to respect.

Did you stand in front of where your trailer used to be and tell the news crew that it sounded like a freight train without putting your Marlboro down?

The path of the F5 that hit Moore, Ok that day was only two or three blocks away from my mother-in-law's house.

Central OK is lacking in many tall, substantial trees, although in my responsibilities as medical reserve, have seen lots of livestock in trees. Truly unreal even when you see it with your own eyes.

Yes you did. Far more deadly than our May 3 experience; 158 fatalities, 1,150 injured. OK sent a lot of support for your community. Having seen similar devastation our hearts truly ached for everyone affected.

We are rebuilt now and most likely if you didn't know there was a tornado and weren't familiar with Joplin you'd probably not even know there was one. But to me it's still very noticeable, primarily because of the mature trees - perhaps tens of thousands of them - just gone. That and the giant new hospital about 1/2 mile from my house that would have never been built if not for the tornado destroying St. Johns.

We very much appreciated the outpouring of help that came our way. I had my hands full taking care of my mom, who lost everything except her life and her dog who somehow survived in her utterly destroyed house. Many of my friends were in the same boat, and we took a few people under our wings to ensure they had a way to get through everything. It was not a fun time.
