How much would YOU offer for this project ?
1973 Triumph TR6. Here's the story. In 2015 this car drove into a shop for an engine and transmission rebuild and a paint job. The car was disassembled, the engine sent to a machine shop and the car was painted... but the shop did not repair the severely rusted floors before they did the deed. Nor did they remove such things like the wiring harness or cables which were crudely masked and things like the horns and steering rack are now covered in overspray. Then the business went tits up and the car sat outside for 4 Northeast winters before the owner had the carcass shipped down South. Of course the stuff at the machine shop did not arrive with the rolling chassis, but the disassembled engine was located, crated and sent under separate cover. The bodywork is starting to bubble, and it is apparent from pics that all parts of the car failed to get from North to South.
Now; I love TRs and have owned 3 and I am a true sucker for orphan classics so I want to save this thing. Owner wants $4K for the hulk, if you were willing to do the deed what would you value the car at? Please save the bandwidth telling me I'm nuts or that you wouldn't take it for free; I don't care... I only want your valuation. Edit: The package includes 2 brand new seats still in plastic wrap... not sure where they came from or what color they are but they are new, not recovered. |

I can forward an email which has a bunch of photos... no idea how to post them here. I have an offer in but want to know the member's opinions before I share mine so I am more certain I am being fair.

Back when I was 15, I had the chance to buy a TR6 for $1500. I was about $1400 short at the time...

From the pics it looks better than I originally thought but a up close and personal inspection is warranted

Those floors don't look "severely" rusted in that pic, but like it was said, a close inspection is needed to really determine how bad they are. I think, judging from the pics, the body looks pretty solid. Now, the drivetrain could be a problem depending on parts availability. How hard is it to find those kinds of parts? Good luck with your bid, hope it works out for you.

Personally, I wouldn't go more than $1500. If the paint is starting to bubble, it is all going to have to be redone to make it right. Also, new wiring, putting everything together, etc. Also, the motor wouldn't go back together until I had it all checked by a reputable machine shop. It will turn into a money pit of magnificent proportion in a hurry. Just my .02 though.

You mentioned the engine was found, but is it included?
What about the transmission? If all there, and I was jones-ing for this car, I'd go $2500.00. I've always liked the style of those TRs, from 3 up to 6, but I'm realistically too "old" to take on a project like that. Good luck with this endeavor! |

If I was interested in a project, I'd prefer one that is at least all there, all together. What happens when you start putting the engine together and there are a few things missing? The main thing going for it seems to be the paint, which you say needs to be redone anyway.
This looks more like a parts car to me. Just my $ .02's. I do think those cars are pretty neat. Have you checked with Spence? I'm pretty sure he bought one, after an exhaustive search. |

Looks like you would spend a lot of time trying to find missing parts, bolts, etc....plus, if the paint is peeling it could be more rust lurking under the pretty surface. I would save my money for a complete car that is together. I hate trying to put a jigsaw puzzle back together with half the pieces missing.

For those who asked, parts are pretty readily available with the real sticking point being some of the transmission internals like main shafts which are not reproduced. Fortunately there are forums like this one out there for we who like the odds and sods of the British Empire. I have no doubt I can source whatever this machine needs... if I can convince the owner that my $1750.00 offer is truly all the money in the world for his derelict. Thanks to all who participated. I will update as there is more info. |
