Not that the ****tard will listen, but anything not attached to the bed (relying on fit and gravity to stay put) will wear through the paint eventually and will rust. You may buy time with bed liner, but friction is friction and it will happen.

News for you: Ford went all metric years ago. The threaded fasteners in the sides of the bed and installed by the factory are metric. The larger ones for the factory cleats and for my blocking are M8-1.25. The smaller ones to fasten a bed extender are M6, and are currently filled with used screws from the transmission pan of my Porsche.
