Yep. A few years ago a buggy pulled up to my house asking about a horse in my field. End result, they breed two mares a year to a horse I raised and keep, I occasionally stop by their vegetable/roadside stand when it is open and take whatever I want for free.
I don’t take advantage and it ends up a far better deal for them than it is for me, but I have not had to pay for honey, molasses or apples since. Have my own garden so taking vegetables is rare but have if something looks particularly good. I didn’t take the bread after the first time because it smells funny. And I assume my horse appreciates the outside action as standing him to the public is too much hassle. My wife teases me about my Amish wife because one of the girls makes me an apple pie anytime I ask for it. Before anyone asks, No pics of pie maker or wife …. against policy. |

Amish are an oddity.
I never understood their time stall. Buttons are ok, but not zippers. Ok then why did you allow the advance to buttons? At one time that was modern. They went to a point and stopped. They where eyeglasses. So they are ok with enhancing their eyesight with an invention like eyeglasses, but I'll bet they don't wear contact lenses. They can have wooden floors as a step above dirt floors, but no carpet? Tile? They can USE modern tools, but can't OWN any. |

Here's how I see it: A number of religions, the Amish among them, take the technology and cultural norms at the time of the religion's founding* and hang on to them as long as they can. Why? -- I don't know, and I don't think there's anything in the Bible about doing that. And the various denominations have their rituals and legalisms, and those who practice "exclusivity" believe that only THEIR members will be the only ones going to Heaven. My family was like that, and ever since I was a kid I thought that was ridiculous. It's probably why I remain a devout agnostic and will likely die like that. * Of course, most Christian denominations claim that their founders can be traced back to Jesus' followers/disciples/whatever they are called. |

None of us know at what point do we become "disconnected" due to technology. So the Amish err on the side of caution. They have found a way to be happy without following any trends. I happen to think that it's admirable. And it's not at all a bad way to live. If I had been Harrison's Ford character in Witness, and happened upon Kelly McGuiness's character, I'm fairly certain that I never would have left. |

Wouldn't that be even better? I grew up with some of this thinking although we had electricity, cars and phones, but no radios or TV and no going to movies. Nobody worked on Sunday except cooking and dishes (no yard work, house work, or laundry) no swearing or foul language ever. This religion was founded in the late 1800s and many of the customs I grew up with mirrored that era. This wasn't just a Sunday thing for my parents, like many "religious" people -- they lived it every minute of every day til they drew their last breaths. My father was the epitome of a "turn the other cheek" Christian. One of my cousins in PA that I've been in contact with (via Face Time) in the past couple of years joined when young (I never did, I rebelled since I was a little kid) and is still in it. He is in his late '60s, but has a TV, computer, smart phone, etc. It's just weird watching this go on, adopting things that were verboten a half-century ago -- as some of the Amish also do. As I see it, these are all technical things that have nothing to do with one's character -- which is much more important to have. I don't think there's anything in the Bible about rejecting things that make everyday life easier -- like well pumps, flush toilets, showers, refrigerators, etc. Having said that, I do have a lot of respect for the Amish, as did my dad, although I'm sure he privately disagreed with their Biblical beliefs. The church I grew up in was "exclusive" (as I mentioned in my previous post) -- they thought anyone not in their ranks was going to Hell. Just my view from the inside looking out. There were a lot of good things about growing up that way, especially as I grew older I realized it. But not everything was good. In another thread I mentioned how great my family is, we all love getting together and always have a great time -- as we will this Sunday also. This mindset among us was set in place by our parents, I guess, it just seems normal to me. I cannot grasp the idea of dreading family gatherings -- as many families do. Oh well, back to the tits and ass. Oops, wrong pik. |

We were up in Bruzes neck of the woods a few years ago and at an antique store in a small crossroads town over the boarder in PA, and a Mennonite family came in. Drove an old '60's Ford F250 pickup and had the beards and hats, etc. They ended up buying an armful of 1890's textbooks for English and math for the kids that were with them (6-10 years old) stating they wanted to teach the children properly. My hat was off to them.
Have a friend that comes from a very old Mennonite family, although he doesn't practice. He makes the best home-made sausages you've ever had, though. Even though he isnt' one, you guys have to agree that Yadkin, in had and overalls, would certainly LOOK like a Mennonite. |
