Just for grins I Googled Bull Prick and it seems that circus Big Top type tent stakes which are 24 to 30 inches long are called bullpricks; and are tapered and have a mushroomed striking head on top. A bit of word trivia for you!

Yeah, I can't imaging digging in dry sand. How do you keep the sand from filling the hole as quickly as you're digging it?

Yes, it is a typing eraser and, usually, that's what happened. You erased so hard you made a hole in the paper. Then we learned we could purchased a kind of typing paper called "erasable bond" that you could erase with a No. 2 pencil eraser. Times were tough back then!!!
