Yo mama so old, she walked into an antique store, and they didn't let her leave.

Yo mama's so ugly, when she was little, she had to trick-or-treat by phone.

Yep, same here.

When I got married (January 1, 1972) we had a choice of a party line or private -- which cost more than the party line.

I think we could dial direct then, but when I was a kid at home and you picked the phone up, an operator would ask "Number please?"

When I bought my camp in 1985 the only thing you could get was a party line. It was a small phone company and for the most part all worked well, and it was about 1/2 the price of private line that we had at my house. Being we only need that phone on summer weekends it was OK. Then after a while they offered a private for lots more money, we as for reasons enumerated above stayed with party. We were grandfathered in but they kept trying to get us and others to move up. The way they had it set up one year around residence and two summer folk had the line. When we built or new house in 2003 we then went private.

As a party we some times had to wait a bit to get the line but for the most part all was well. Only had one incident that was bad as a party. Wife and kids were staying at the camp for a week and I commuted to Albany (about 60 miles) to work. My wife told me to call her before I left city in case she needed something. I started calling at 2.30 busy, called many times till 4.00 still busy.

Stopped at every pay station along my route north till I was over 1/2 way to camp, still busy. Called the operator she said people talking and she would not ask them to finish their call.. Got to the camp about 5 15 picked up the phone, people on the line yet. My wife said every time she tried to use the phone they were talking!

Kinda of lost it and said some real bad things and started picking up and slamming down the phone till they gave up. (found out she was a summer person just like us) After that any time we wanted the phone and that lady was on it we slammed the phone repetitively to get the line open.its a wonder we did not get in trouble for that but we only used the line for a few minuets every now and then not hours at a time. The next summer we never had that woman on the phone any time we picked it up.

As a kid or when first married we didn't have too much problem with other people yakking forever, but it would happen once in a while. Most people, when they heard you picking up several times, people being mostly considerate back then, would hang up.

One of my uncles was a farmer in southwestern NYS (Cattaraugus) which was about all anybody did there. They lived on a dirt road, everybody knew everybody, there were only party lines and all the phones rang on that line with any incoming call. Your phone might be assigned two rings, someone else would be three rings, etc. so you would know the call was for you by the number of rings and you picked it up.

Being farmers, everybody headed for bed around 9 PM, summer or winter. I can remember the phone ringing around 9 PM for the next farm up the hill, and my aunt, who knew it was their ring, exclaiming: "Now who would be calling Julia at this time of night??"

It's a bit different today.
