Default Didn't see a bumper jack this these in a long time

Man is Richard Gere (actor), eye candy for the ladies of the forum. Vehicle 59 or 60 Buick. Never used such a jack, worried about safety if I used it.

We had one of those in a garage I worked during college. Seemed to work.

We used one in the shop in the mid '80's. It was extremely stable. We would lift by the frame or pinch-weld, though, not the bumpers, which by then were flimsy aluminum or plastic. Very fast and easy for tire or brake work. Ours was pneumatic.

Most of these had locking dogs for safety.

Yep. 70’s at my first job. Worked under them. Had to drag the stupid hose and then use brake levers for up/down.

Yes!

Rule #1: Never crawl under a car without jack stands or other support aside from the jack.

Rule #2: Gravity is an unrelenting bitch.

Of course, I'm paranoid, so I use jack stands, leave the jack in place, and stack wood blocks on the side I'm actually under.

seguridad primero!

Again, with these types of jacks, there are locking lugs, similar to modern electric hoists. To lower the jack, you have to raise it off the locking lug, pull the lever to retract the lug, and then lower the lift while holding the lug lever in 'retract' mode. There is no way for the car to drop with one of these if it is lifting at a secure point. Agree that use of jackstands or if you're Antfarmer hiding out as Big Bob, Oak Stumps, make it that much safer.

Yep, me too, jack stands and 6x6 wood blocks for extra safety.

I'm not as 'phisticated as you young guys, so I'm usually working in the dirt/gravel. I rebuilt my '51 Fergie tractor engine just beyond where the Vette is in 2001 in the grass, lol. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do, but I'm done with all that shit now. I pay other people to do it.

I remember the big old chrome bumpers with the slot for the bumper jack.

Some big cars had the bumper jack with the part went under the bumper also. Better have the long jack handle and some ass behind it to get those big bastards rasied up.
Pretty sure satan invented bumper jacks.
I've almost been killed by 3 legged jack stands more than once... Old rim or blocks of wood still go under a car as extra protection.

That’s the ones I was referring to a couple of posts up. It may have been on my dads 63 Biscayne.

we had jalopies when I was a teenager, a 70 impala and a 73 monte carlo rust bucket. They both used those damn things. couldnt jack too high or they would start to angle-dangle and scare you, lol.
