The brigade at Ft. Ord served as extras in 1961 at Ft Ord for the filming of the flag retreat scene in the movie Soldier in the Rain.

I enjoyed that movie as well. My Dad, a career Army CWO, thought that Jackie Gleason was just a little too rotund to play a senior NCO.

53 years ago today I left the Los Angeles induction center too. Sched to go to Ft Ord but a breakout of
meningitis forced us up to Ft Lewis in WA state. Almost every other hour all through basic we had to break out our wet weather gear because of rain! I swore I'd never return to this state, but I lied. Been here since 1978. I love the rain! I volunteered instead of waiting for the draft. I wanted Armor(tanks-I loved guns and heavy machinery), and stood a better chance of getting it by getting a preference by volunteering versus draft. Volunteer=3 years, draft=2years. I got Armor and never regretted it. I remember the baton on the trash can lid every morning too! Always accompanied with the morning greeting: "Good morning ladies! Drop your cocks and grab your socks!" |
