Didn't really look like he had a hard hit. The car wasn't all that bad...

The issue arises from what his head did inside the car, unfortunately

What could he have possibly hit?

With those famous Hendrick/LaJoie seats, a HANS, and a top of the line helmet, I can't imagine a hit like that giving someone a concussion.

...unless of course something wasn't working as it should.

All those devices are great for neck injuries. But they still can't prevent the brain from hitting the side of the skull and bouncing around in the cerebral fluid. Boxer's syndrome. And if he gets a couple more whacks he could be out for good. (aka hockey players)

How does a football player get one going at foot speed wearing all that protective gear?

All the external stuff doesn't do squat when your skull stops quickly and the brain smacks into bone.

Here's the Jr. footage... there wasn't anything even close to a hard hit from what I can see.

The HANS is for neck injuries... the seats are designed to protect the neck but ALSO the head itself. Obviously not Jr. in the picture, but the same seat. The only direction that there is not padding to cushion the head is straight forward... and he didn't hit anything head on. These seats are designed with the specific intent of cushioning blows to the head and preventing not only neck injuries, but head injuries as well.

I understand concussions... I just don't see a hit that should have caused one in this case. Obviously there is more than meets the eye.

...and more than likely, had Dale Sr. been using the same safety gear that Jr. had this week, he would have walked away.

I would like to see the data from Jr's crash to see what the impacts actually were. Looks can be decieving. Numbers don't lie. Too bad NASCAR won't release it...
